    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

    1.  If you haven't done so yet, please read this short, good document that provides important background on the sonnet:

[Sonnet definition and history-1.pdf](https://canvas.mc3.edu/courses/24113/files/5036772?wrap=1 "Sonnet definition and history-1.pdf") [Download Sonnet definition and history-1.pdf](https://canvas.mc3.edu/courses/24113/files/5036772/download?download_frd=1)

    2.  It's important to know that almost all sonnets are 14 lines long, and they break down into 2 different kinds of sonnets (for the most part):  The Petrarchan and the Shakespearean sonnet model.  Almost all sonnets have a volta.  It's usually at the start of line 9.  And all sonnets end with a couplet (back-to-back lines that rhyme).

    3.  Make sure to read up on Shakespeare and jot down key facts about him and his writing, especially anything you can find about his sonnets.

    4. Then, please read Sonnet 12 by William Shakespeare:  [https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/90067/sonnet-12-when-i-do-count-the-clock-that-tells-the-time-578cfa272532bLinks to an external site.](https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/90067/sonnet-12-when-i-do-count-the-clock-that-tells-the-time-578cfa272532b)

Shakespeare is extremely hard to understand, and this sonnet is no exception, even though it is often the one that teachers use to introduce sonnets to their students.  So please read the sonnet over a few times.  Be ready to stumble over a lot of language that you don't understand.  Look up words you don't know.  Slow down and try to make sense of what you are reading!

    5.  When you've done that, make sure to read the two documents below this line.  They prepare you for trying to scan two lines of Shakespeare's sonnet on your own!  You've already seen the first document, but not the second.  The doc on Meter is new to you.

[English 235 Understanding scansion 2023-1.docx](https://canvas.mc3.edu/courses/24113/files/5036777?wrap=1 "English 235 Understanding scansion 2023-1.docx") [Download English 235 Understanding scansion 2023-1.docx](https://canvas.mc3.edu/courses/24113/files/5036777/download?download_frd=1)

[English 235 Meter in poetry june 2022-3.docx](https://canvas.mc3.edu/courses/24113/files/5036773?wrap=1 "English 235 Meter in poetry june 2022-3.docx") [Download English 235 Meter in poetry june 2022-3.docx](https://canvas.mc3.edu/courses/24113/files/5036773/download?download_frd=1)

    6.  Last of all, please answer the study questions from the document below.  Only respond to Sonnet 12 at this point:

    [English 235 Shakespeare sonnet 12 and 29 homework.docx](https://canvas.mc3.edu/courses/24113/files/5036761?wrap=1 "English 235 Shakespeare sonnet 12 and 29 homework.docx") [Download English 235 Shakespeare sonnet 12 and 29 homework.docx](https://canvas.mc3.edu/courses/24113/files/5036761/download?download_frd=1)

You are assigned Lines 9 and 10 when asked in the questions

In order to achieve my SMART goal, I will focus on studying daily, by reviewing my course materials or learning something course-related at least one hour after every class or school day. I will also use planner and develop my schedule to ensure I stay organized, which will help complete assignments at least two days before they are due. At the end of every week, I will be reviewing upcoming assignment or discussion deadlines, participate in group discussions, and spend extra time reading challenging topics.

    **Monitoring My Progress**

To track whether am achieving my goals, and areas of improvement, I will be monitoring my progress regularly, preferably weekly. I will monitor my progress by reviewing my grades weekly to ensure I achieve at least 90% in every class, including assessing how I completed assignments, my study habits, and compare my performance to my goal at the end of each week. In case I notice am falling behind my goal, I will seek additional support in addition to adjusting my study schedule.

    **Celebrate my achievement**

Celebrating my achievement will allow me to appreciate my progress, stay motivated, and build confidence for future academic and personal goals. As such, if I achieve my goal I will celebrate by treating myself to something that I enjoy such as going for movie or spending a day relaxing with friends and family. A relaxing day will also allow me to take some time and reflect on my progress, strategies that helped me succeed, and what to add in the next goal.
