    THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK (for research)
    This is an
    Attraction Theory.
Attraction theory is established by a psychologist, Samuel Frenning. This theory explores and explains the different reasons for people to like one another, ie. attraction. This theory also proposes various elements that will lead to or interfere with the attraction between individuals. This theory has a base in the principle of reinforcement, indicating attraction is formed and maintained based on the outcome. The repeated desirable outcome will encourage more attraction between individuals and encourage people to keep the relationship. In this theory, there are three types of attraction and four principles of attraction. Physical, social, and task attraction. (add more!)

  • The question is this: When Gatsby and Nick are driving into Manhattan, their car…

The question is this: When Gatsby and Nick are driving into Manhattan, their car is slowed by a policeman who threatens to give them a speeding ticket. Yet when Gatsby waves a “white card,” the policeman apologizes for failing to recognize him and lets the car go (68). What does this incident reveal about Gatsby? Use two pieces of evidence and at least two sentences of analysis after each in your response.
    My answer to this is:
The speeding ticket incident reveals that Gatsby is up to no good, using his social status unwisely to do illegal things and get away with it. Clearly, Gatsby is a wealthy man, as shown through the extravagant, luxurious parties he throws. However, with such great wealth, this allows Gatsby to have a lot of power. This is evident when Gatsby and Nick are driving into Manhattan to have lunch with Mr. Wolfsheim. While driving, Gatsby goes way past the speed limit, and Nick only notices that when he hears a policeman coming up beside them. However, instead of getting a ticket, Gatsby takes “a white card from his wallet [and waves] it before the man’s eyes. ‘Right you are,’ agreed the policeman, tipping his cap. ‘Know you next time, Mr. Gatsby. Excuse
    me
!’” (Fitzgerald 72). Gatsby not receiving a speeding ticket and showing a card to get away with his crime shows that he is not the man he seems. Gatsby basically bribes the officer not to give him a police card. What he bribed the police officer with is a mystery. Nick inquires, “What was that … The picture of Oxford?” to which Gatsby replies, “I was able to do the commissioner a favor once, and he sends me a Christmas card every year” (Fitzgerald 73). Here, Gatsby is able to use his social status and connections to the head of the police department in order to bribe and force the policeman to disregard the ticket and get on with his day. Gatsby commits two illegal crimes in the frame of a single page. He first drives at a speed disregarding any speed limits, and he bribes a police officer. The thing to take away is that he is able to get away with it. This means that Gatsby must be up to no good as he is unjustly using his social power, wealth, and status to bypass laws that other people have to deal with. It also brings up the question of what other illegal crimes Gatsby is getting away with. We find out later in the book that he is a bootlegger, and the reason he has gotten away with it is the same as how he got away with speeding and bribery. Therefore, this incident reveals that Gatsby is not a trustworthy man and that he is irresponsibly using his power to commit illegal doings.
Does this make sense? Also, do I put at least two sentences of analysis after each quote?
