Read Passage 1 The Solitary Reaper. Then respond to questions 1-6, The Solitary Reaper From StudySync Platform Behold her, single in the field, Yon solitary Highland Lass! Reaping and singing by herself; Stop here, or gently pass! Alone she cuts and binds the grain, And sings a melancholy strain, O listen! for the Vale profound Is overflowing with the sound. No Nightingale did ever chaunt More welcome notes to weary bands Of travellers in some shady haunt, Among Arabian sands: A voice so thrilling ne’er was heard In spring-time from the Cuckoo-bird, Breaking the silence of the seas Among the farthest Hebrides. Will no one tell me what she sings? Perhaps the plaintive numbers flow For old, unhappy, far-off things, And battles long ago: Or is it some more humble lay, Familiar matter of to-day? Some natural sorrow, loss, or pain, That has been, and may be again? Whate’er the theme, the Maiden sang As if her song could have no ending, I saw her singing at her work, And o’er the sickle bending; – I listened, motionless and still; And, as I mounted up the hill The music in my heart I bore, Long after it was heard no more.
    1. How does the poet’s choice in rhyme scheme enhance the meaning of the poem? (R.1.4)
    A. It enhances the poem’s structure to emphasize the chaos of the maiden’s song.
    B. It enhances the poet’s tone to suggest that he no longer wants to hear the song.
    C. It enhances the musical quality of the poem to highlight its focus on the maiden’s song.
    D. It enhances the rhythmic quality of the poem to reveal the speaker’s anger at hearing the song.
    2. Select two statements showing how the combination of the two rhyme schemes, in each stanza, creates ambiguity. (R. 1.4)
    A. by enhancing the speaker’s questioning and the maiden’s unclear responses.
    B. by portraying how the speaker is unconcerned with discovering the maiden’s subject of the song.
    C. by enhancing the speaker’s thoughts about the contents of the maiden’s song and the realization of her topic.
    D. by enhancing the speaker’s struggle to make sense of the song because it has a break in consistency within each stanza.
    E. by portraying an indecisiveness reflecting the speaker’s multiple attempts, and failures, to discover the subject of the maiden’s song.
    3. In lines 17-24, how does the speaker’s perspective conflict with other perspectives in the poem? (R. 1.3)
    A. The speaker wishes he could understand what the maiden’s song is about, while others question his motives for asking.
    B. The speaker projects his own ideas about what the maiden’s perspective may be, while the maiden’s perspective is never actually known.
    C. The speaker continues to wonder about the subject of the maiden’s song, while the maiden wishes that the speaker would leave her alone.
    D. The speaker believes that the maiden’s song is beautiful and sad, while others do not believe that he should have an understanding of what it means.
    4. How do the final two stanzas of the poem create ambiguity in the meaning of the poem? (R. 1.4)
    A. The speaker speaks to the maiden to ask her what the theme of her song is, but she provides no clarity.
    B. The speaker continues to express his confusion about the subject of the song, but leaves content to not have his confusion resolved.
    C. The speaker sees the maiden again, expresses the emotions he felt upon hearing her song, and makes his own conclusion about the theme of the song.
    D. The speaker poses questions, which are left unanswered allowing for multiple interpretations, leaving the end of the poem with no more clarity than when it began.

  • Entrepreneurship is a trendy topic. It is the process of discovering new ways of…

Entrepreneurship is a trendy topic. It is the process of discovering new ways of combining resources. And these days everyone wants to be an entrepreneur.  But an entrepreneur is not what you are, it’s what you become. They’re dreamers, unemployables. And by the time they’ve finally carried the respect of the business community, they’ve already made it. Actually, the road to entrepreneurial success can’t be mapped out in advance. You get there one sale at a time.
In the beginning, only the entrepreneur needs to see the goal. And the goal is quite simple: you get an idea; you identify your customer; you make a sale. Then you make another and another and another until your office in your bedroom has turned into the tower block in Manhattan you always wanted. Forget about marketing strategy at this stage. What you need first is a steady cashflow. Wait patiently. Focus on the details. That’s how it works. Big companies are just small companies that got bigger.
A unique example is Mark Zuckerberg, a Harvard dropout and co-founder of Facebook.   Initially, Zuckerberg believed that his project was a social network for students.  Soon, Facebook went beyond the education sector, becoming more and more popular. Mark Zuckerberg started looking for investors.  Peter Thiel, one of the founders of PayPal invested $500,000. Then, Accel Partners invested in Facebook $12.7 million. By then Facebook became accessible to the public, and a Facebook ‘epidemic’ started.
Another example is Nicolas Hayek, the man who invented the Swatch and brought the Swiss watchmaking industry back from a period of inactivity. The Swatch is a 20th century icon. And, incredibly, though, the price on a new one has never increased.  Some of the highly collectable early designs are now classed as art and cost more than £20,000 – not bad for a plastic watch!
    Istotell
So, what makes a good entrepreneur? The entrepreneur is more likely to be someone who discovers an instinctive ability for building companies from nothing, gets bored quickly and moves on. Most of all, they are a master of risk-management. As Sir James Goldsmith says, “The ultimate risk is not taking a risk.”
    REVIEW
Keep in mind these important points:
Entrepreneurism is a trendy topic. An entrepreneur is what you become and you get there one sale at a time.  The entrepreneur needs to see the goal, have a steady cash flow, build companies from the beginning, and be a master of risk-management.
    T2.1: Professional vocabulary

    MODULE 7
THE SELF AND BEING A FILIPINO (PART ONE)
What makes a Filipino a genuine Filipino? Do physical characteristics makes one a Filipino? Or is it a person’s language, birth place and ethnicity?
The Philippines emerged in the 1890s after over three centuries of colonization of the Spaniards, Americans and Japanese. Their foreign culture, beliefs, language and religion have made a huge effect in our own culture, beliefs, language and religion by setting a foundation to the contemporary Filipino identity and culture. At present, colonial mentality remains an issue.
Filipino Values And Traits. Tourists who have visited the Philippines can never forget the bid and bright smiles that greeted them, the colourful and loud jeepneys, the common Filipino phrases such as “Mabuhay” and “Salamat” and habits such as saying “po” and “opo” to the elders, leaving shoes or slippers at the front door before entering a house, and the asking of “Kumain ka na ba?” Indeed, it is a marvel to experience these unique traits of the Filipinos.
The Filipino Hospitality. A Filipino trait that is known worldwide is the Filipino’s brand of hospitality. Filipinos welcome their guests and tourists as if they are their own brothers and sisters by always making them feel at home, offering them something to eat or even a place to stay. They will bring out their best sets of plates for their honoured guests and would even go as far as spending a lot of money just to satisfy them. In most local shops, Filipino salesmen will greet their customers with warm welcome and say thank you when they leave even without buying anything. Filipinos also anticipate giving tours to friends who will visit their hometown and treating them to the best restaurants and delicacies for free. During festivals or fiestas, Filipinos serve heaps of festive food and invite the whole barangay over. They are also fond of giving pasalubong or tokens from their travels and pabaon or farewell gifts to their visitors.
Respect For Elders. Filipinos greet their elders by kissing their hand while saying “Mano po” and constantly using “po” and “opo” in conversations. Forgetting to address older people properly will regard them as rude or impolite. There is also a wide array of references to elder people such as “ate” for older sister, “kuya” for older brother, “tito” and “tita” for uncle and auntie, “lolo” and “lola” for grandfather and grandmother, “manong” and “aling” for older people outside the family.
Close Family Ties. Filipinos maintain a tight relationship with their family regardless that the children are old enough and already have families of their own. They are also fond of family reunions during birthdays, holidays and fiestas year-round. Some Filipino families even opt to live in a big house where everyone can stay together. Nursing homes are not an option for family members and choose to take care of their elders themselves.
Cheerful Personality. Filipinos have the habit of smiling and laughing a lot. They smile when they are happy, sad, or angry. Smiling has been a coping strategy for many Filipinos especially during trying times and calamities. Filipinos have a tendency to smile and wave at the camera despite being interviewed after a fire or flooding incident. They always try to maintain a positive outlook in life which makes them resilient and able to manage almost everything with a simple smile.
    END
    Questions to answer:
    1) Why do tourists love to visit the Philippines?
    2) How do Filipinos show their hospitality?
    3) How is the Filipino resilient?
    4) Are Filipinos still respectful to their elders today? Why do you say so?
    5) Are you proud to be a Filipino? Why?
    6) Did you ever wish to have a different citizenship? Why?
