In C.S. Lewis’s

Wang, The Trip
AP® Character and Narration. In paragraph 2 Links to an external site., the wife tells the husband that her parents have paid for their trip to China. What do the details of her explanation reveal about her family’s attitude toward him and their relationship?
AP® Character and Narration. Readers never know the names of the husband, the wife, or her cousin, but the names of the guides, a man on the tour, and the husband’s in-laws are all given. What do most of the names we learn to have in common, and why are these similarities significant? Why might Weike Wang have also included Karl’s name?
AP® Character and Narration. In paragraph 15 Links to an external site., the protagonist learns that his wife has only a basic understanding of Chinese so cannot discuss substantive topics. How does this revelation cause a shift in the husband’s attitude toward his wife? How does his wife’s grasp of Chinese continue to develop throughout the story?
AP® Character. Why does the wife say she wants so badly to spend time with her family? How does this compare with the husband’s attitude about spending time with his family? -
The conversion of Cornelius and his household in Acts 10 parallels the events in…
The conversion of Cornelius and his household in Acts 10 parallels the events in Acts 2 in many ways. In both instances, the Holy Spirit descended upon the believers and filled them with power. This power enabled them to speak in tongues and to proclaim the gospel to those around them. In both instances, the conversion of the gentiles caused a great stir amongst the Jewish believers. In Acts 2, Peter was forced to explain his actions to the other apostles, while in Acts 10, Peter had to explain the conversion of Cornelius and his household to the believers in Jerusalem. The vision Peter sees prior to his trip to Cornelius’ home is of great significance. In it, he is commanded to not consider anything unclean, indicating that God was opening the way for gentiles to be included in the church. Through this vision, God showed Peter that he should not judge others based on their cultural and religious identity, but rather accept them as equals. This would have been a radical departure from the Jewish tradition, which excluded gentiles from the faith. The significance of this vision is that it marked the beginning of the inclusion of gentiles into the church, a major event in the early church. Just before his meeting with Cornelius, Peter is filled with questions and confusion. This is understandable, as it would have been a momentous decision for him to make. On one hand, he had been taught to reject gentiles, but on the other hand, he was being commanded by God to include them. It must have been a difficult decision for Peter, and he must have felt a great sense of trepidation. He was no doubt filled with a mixture of emotions, from fear to excitement, as he prepared himself to meet Cornelius and his household.
