One of Henrik Ibsen’s earliest plays, written in 1867, is Peer Gynt.
Unlike his later realistic dramas, such as Hedda Gabler and A Doll’s House, Peer Gynt is a fantasy, derived in part from Peter Asbjornsen’s Norwegian Fairy Tales. Peer, the central character of Ibsen’s play, is a selfish adventurer. The play, in part, satirizes the romanticism of writers like Henry David Thoreau. The play is difficult to stage because of its many scene changes, and Ibsen wrote it in verse, never intending for it to be performed. However, the music of Edvard Grieg, a Norwegian composer, helped to popularize the play. Songs such as Morning Mood, Anitra’s Dance, and In the Hall of the Mountain King, from Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, Opus 46, and Solveig’s Song, from Peer Gynt Suite No. 2, Opus 55, are often heard in concert, widely recognized, and frequently used to introduce elementary school children to classical music.

One of the most prolific twentieth-century American Songwriters was Irving Berlin, born Israel Baline, who lived to the amazing age of 101.
Born in Russia in 1888 to an ashkenazi jewish family, he and his family immigrated in 1893.
Berlin’s father, Misheh Baline, was a Cantor and also worked certifying Kosher meat, but he died in 1896, and young Israel was forced to find work. One of the greatest thrills of my life was to sing with my community choir at Carnegie Hall
. Of course, we paid for the privilege, but besides singing in this famous American concert hall, we also sang under the direction of John Rutter, the English choral conductor and composer. We joined several other choirs to create a choir of 250 voices singing two of Rutter’s long works, Te Deum and Gloria. Rutter is a delightful, caring person, who conducts with both passion and kindness. I remember the experience fondly, and our choir continues to include Rutter Christmas carols in many of our programs. I have sung his Angel’s Carol, Candlelight Carol, Shepherd’s Pipe Carol, Love Came Down at Christmas, and What Sweeter Music. Rutter has also arranged other traditional carols, such as Silent Night. This year, we are singing Rejoice and Be Merry, a song Rutter wrote for the Washington Cathedral Choral Society instead of his own Cambridge Singers.

The way Plato argue that the moral person is better off than the immoral person is that he answer the challenge from Sophist by referring to the three parts of the soul which is appetite, spirit, and reason. He mention if the three soul works well then it performs its proper function well in order to achieve harmony in a moral way. According to the quote from Plato’s reasoning why the moral person is better than the immoral person is he said “The unjust life is out of balance, with inner conflict among the parts of the soul wreaking psychological pain and external calamity. From an immoral life may come transitory enjoyment but no true happiness. But the just life, despite any outward misfortune and the disdain of the unjust, is the most beneficial and, in the best sense of the word, the happiest.” (Vaughn, 96). This is how Plato ague that a moral person is better than the immoral person. The reason why Plato’s argument is significant regarding the morality of a person is because then life will just be boring and no meaning to the importance of life then.
