    MY Topic: MARTIN LUTHER

Research Paper Guidelines: Each student will prepare a 1250-1750 word general research paper on one of the topics listed below. The paper should be typed, double spaced, and in a 12pt font. This paper must be supported by at least 5 legitimate sources, including at least 1 primary source. The paper must also be supported by citations (footnotes) and a bibliography page, and these must conform to the History Department Writing Guide. The paper is worth 30% of the course grade.

Students may formulate their own paper topic, but ONLY in consultation with the professor.

    Expectations for Research Papers

This is designed to be a short guide to what the History Department expects from research papers in its courses. IT DOES NOT REPLACE THE HISTORY DEPARTMENT WRITING GUIDE! In addition to being graded on the factual content of the paper, you will also be graded upon the following:

Plagiarism – If you plagiarize, you will receive either a 0 for the assignment, or a 0 for the course, at the discretion of the professor. You will then be subject to all penalties described in The Lance.

Unacceptable selection and/or use of sources – If you make use of unacceptable sources (Wikipedia, other non-refereed internet sources, etc.) OR you use your sources in an unacceptable manner (paraphrasing, etc) your grade will be immediately reduced to a 69 (a D!), and all subsequent grading will begin from that point.

Failure to cite – You must properly cite your sources (i.e. footnotes). A bibliography at the end of the paper, while a necessary component of the paper, does not replace the need for citations. Any paper turned in without citations will receive a 0! Papers with minimal citations will be graded accordingly.

Improper Citation – The History Department Writing Guide prescribes the appropriate method of citation (Turabian style footnotes). Turning in a paper with citations in another format (MLA or APA), will result in the reduction of your grade to a 75, and all subsequent grading will begin from that point.

Late Papers – Late papers will NOT be accepted. All papers for this course are to be submitted via the Canvas course page. The paper file MUST by in .docx, .doc, .wpd, .rtf, or .pdf format. You may NOT submit .wps (Wordpad or Microsoft Works) files. It is solely the student’s responsibility to make sure the proper paper, in the proper file format, is uploaded by the proper time. Hard copies or e-mailed papers will not be accepted. Late papers or improperly submitted papers will receive a grade of 0.

Grammar and Spelling – The ability to communicate via the written word is a necessary component of a college-level education. Thus, grammar and spelling are ALWAYS important! The existence of some consistent, but minor, grammatical/spelling problems will result in the loss of a letter grade. Consistent major grammatical problems will drop the paper to a 69, and all subsequent grading will continue from that point. Such grammatical issues include, but are not limited to, the following:

    Subject/Verb Agreement

    Tense Shifting

    Run-on Sentences

    Sentence Fragments

    Immigration and Border Control

    Final Exam

    Spring 2025

**Immigration reform** –- Our immigration system is broken, and needs change. Too many people want to live and work in the U.S.; we make it very difficult to do so. Thus, an estimated 11-12 million people are here without documentation.

    **Project Title**:

**_"Examining the Human and Policy Dimensions of Immigration and Border Control"._**

    **Objective**:

To analyze a specific aspect of immigration and border control and present a multidimensional understanding of the issue on an academic presentation poster.

    **Possible Topics:**

You can choose one of the following
    **or** propose a related idea:

    1.
**Comparative Policies**: Compare the immigration and border policies of two countries (e.g., U.S. vs. Canada, Germany vs. Turkey).

    2.
**Border Technology**: Evaluate the effectiveness and ethical implications of technologies like surveillance drones, AI-based monitoring, or biometric systems.

    3.
**Migration Drivers**: Examine the economic, environmental, or political factors driving migration in a specific region.

    4.
**Case Study**: Focus on a real-world immigration issue (e.g., the U.S.-Mexico border, Syrian refugees in Europe).

    5.
**Impact of Policies**: Analyze the human impact of policies like family separation, detention centers, or asylum-seeking protocols.

    6.
**Historical Perspective**: Compare historical immigration policies with modern-day practices.

    **Structure of the Poster:**

    1.
    **Title Section**:

    · Clear and concise title.

    · Student name(s) and course information.

    2.
    **Introduction**:

    · Brief overview of the topic.

    · Research question or thesis statement.

    3.

    · A thematic color scheme for clarity and engagement.

    6.
    **Conclusion**:

    · Summary of findings.

    · Implications or recommendations.

    **7. References**:

    · Citations of sources in a corner of the poster using APA format.

    **Assessment Criteria:**

    4.
**Critical Thinking**: Are multiple perspectives or dimensions of the issue addressed?

    5.
**Professionalism**: Is the poster neat, well-designed, and properly cited?

**Instructions for doing a virtual academic poster on Canva:**

Canva is an excellent option for creating posters for presenting scientific research. To create a poster:

    1.
    **Log into Canva** (
[www.canva.com](https://www.canva.com/)). See the "Getting Started" tab for information on setting up an account.

    2. Click
    **Create a Design**.

    3. In the search bar, type "
**poster**." Select the size you need. Keep in mind that landscape (where the width is greater than the height) is better for posters that will be viewed online.

    4. If you need to, you can
**resize your poster** by clicking the Resize button in the upper left. (NOTE: if you are presenting your poster at a conference, check the required dimensions before starting your project.).

    5.
**Use a design template** (by browsing through them using the search button) OR
    **start with a blank design**.

    6. If you have a lot of charts and graphs, you might want to start with a blank design.

    7.
**Add text, elements, and graphics.** Drag them around to arrange them on the poster. As you drag items around, the system shows gridlines to help you align elements.

    8. Keep in mind that the size of your poster will be much bigger than your screen. Slide the percentage bar at the bottom right to 100% to zoom into full size. The text should be large enough to read from
    **5 feet away**.

    9. You can
**print your poster** through Canva, or download it to a PNG file and have it printed elsewhere.
