    ## Writing Assignment #1

**Critical Annotated Bibliography of Five Sources**

    **Summary of assignment**

¡ Task: In this assignment you will write a list of at least 5 sources in alphabetical order in APA format. In addition, each reference will be followed by a short analytical summary of 150-200 words. At the end of the short summary, you will include a sentence or two that critically analyzes the source and that mentions distinctive features about the article and why it may or may not be useful for you in pursuing more research.

¡ Length: Each annotation should be 150-200 words.

    ¡ Format: APA

¡ Sources: Five sources, all of which you will find through OneSearch

o All of your articles should be from scholarly journals or credible trade journals.

    They should
    _not_ be from popular journals.

    ## Strategies in Selecting a Topic for your Annotated Bibliography

**You may select a topic of your choice. However, when selecting a topic, keep in mind that it should be a topic on which a number of studies or scholarly articles have been published.**

Examples of topics students have chosen in the past or that would be workable for this assignment are the following:

¡ The impact of the Internet on research methods of students and plagiarism in student papers

¡ The impact of The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act on primary school education.

¡ The impact of mobile devices on cybersecurity

Overall, in considering a topic, you might consider your major, topics that will be covered in future classes you plan to take at WGU, and your interests.

NOTE- this is from me the student. FUTURE CLASES ARE PSYCHOLOGY OF STRESS AND INTRODUCTION TO CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

For example, please examine the following ideas:

¡ If your major is criminal justice, you might consider researching the different types of CSI effects that have been explored in the literature or researching what studies have noted about body cameras for law enforcement officials.

¡ If your major is psychology, you might consider researching counseling strategies, consumer behavior in online shopping, decision-making in upper-management positions, etc.

¡ If your major is history, you might consider researching theories on the Civil War, studies on labor patterns in the United States, an aspect of military history, etc.

¡ If your major is social science, you might consider researching community responses to health care threats, co-parenting patterns after divorce, etc.

¡ If your major is cybersecurity, you might consider researching different studies that analyze the training of employees on cyber issues or researching the Agile and Waterfall methods of project development.

    ## Whatever topic you consider, keep in mind that it should be a topic on which a number of studies or scholarly articles have been published. You will conduct all or most of your research using UMGC’s OneSearch function in finding scholarly articles or articles from credible trade journals.

    **Approach**

This assignment will be an analytical/critical annotated bibliography. The difference between the descriptive/informative annotated bibliography and the analytical/critical annotated bibliography is explained in the following video:

    The transcript is at:

**Critical thinking and A.I. for this assignment**

When creating an annotated bibliography, it’s important to read and think critically about your sources to ensure that your work is accurate, thoughtful, and useful. First, careful reading helps you fully understand the source’s main arguments, evidence, and conclusions, which prevents misrepresentation. Critical thinking also allows you to evaluate a source’s credibility by considering the author’s credentials, the quality of the evidence, and how current or relevant the information is. In addition, it helps you recognize any bias or perspective the author may bring, which is essential for using the source appropriately and fairly. Another key reason for critical engagement is determining the source’s relevance to your specific research question; not every source on your general topic will support your goals. By thinking deeply about your sources, you’re also better able to make connections between them, identify patterns or gaps in the research, and build a strong foundation for your own argument. Finally, the process of writing an annotation requires more than just summarizing—it involves evaluating and reflecting on how the source fits into your project. All of this is only possible if you’ve read and analyzed your materials with care and attention.

If you plan to use a Large Language Model, or A.I., please use the following information to guide your use:

    1.
    **Use AI as a**
**_support tool_, not a replacement for your own thinking and writing.**

    · AI can help summarize or explain sources, but your synthesis—the combining of ideas and your own analysis—should be your work.

    2.
    **Always**
**_read and understand_ your sources yourself.**

    · Don’t rely on AI to tell you what a source says. Use it to clarify language or check your interpretation but engage directly with each source.

    3.
**Avoid having AI generate your annotations.**

    · It’s okay to ask for help brainstorming or organizing, but writing entire sections with AI and submitting them as your own is plagiarism.

    4.
**Cite AI if it contributed to your thinking.**

¡ When using AI to help generate ideas, summaries, or outlines, acknowledge that in a note or comment.

    ¡ Example:
_"I used ChatGPT to help brainstorm connections among my sources, but all analysis and writing are my own."_

    5.
**Check AI-generated content against your sources.**

    · AI can “hallucinate” (make things up) or misrepresent information. Always verify any summaries or facts it provides.

    6.
**Do not fabricate sources or citations with AI.**

¡ Generating fake quotes, authors, or studies is academic dishonesty.

    ## Submitting the assignment:

You will submit an initial draft of the essay to the assignment folder. The first draft will not be graded. The instructor will provide comments to it.

After receiving comments from the instructor, you will submit a revised draft to the same assignment folder. The final draft will be graded.

    APA Style

The paper should be formatted in APA style. The link “APA 7th edition example student paper” from Week 3 will be a helpful resource. In summary, you should observe the following:

    ¡ ¡Use one-inch margins.

    ¡ ¡Double space.

¡ ¡Use size 12 Times New Roman font.

    ¡ ¡Include a running head.

    ¡ ¡Include page numbers.

    ¡ ¡Include a title page.

    · ·Include a “References” page on which you list the articles in APA style

¡ Include working links to all sources, or copies of pdfs of all sources

    ¡
Include acknowledgment of any AI/LLM use. Describe how the tool was used.

    **Helpful Resources and Websites**

The following are some links to sample Annotated Bibliographies. Some of them give examples in APA format. You may want to observe these examples and perhaps model your work after them.

Ms. Z is a 28-year-old assistant store manager who arrives at your
outpatient clinic complaining of sadness after her boyfriend of 6 months
romantic relationships, and says, “I don’t do well with breakups.” Ms. Z
reports that, although she has no prior psychiatric treatment, she
was urged by her employer to seek therapy. Ms. Z has arrived late to
work on several occasions because of oversleeping. She also has
difficulty in getting out of bed stating, “It’s difficult to walk; it’s like my
legs weigh a ton.” She feels fatigued during the day despite spending
over 12 hours in bed and is concerned that she might be suffering from
a serious medical condition. She denies any significant changes in
appetite or weight since these symptoms began.

Ms. Z reports that, although she has not missed workdays, she
has difficulty concentrating and has become tearful in front of clients
while worrying about not finding a significant other. She feels
tremendous guilt over “not being good enough to get married,” and says

    Psychiatric Case

After studying Module 6: Lecture Materials & Resources, discuss the following

Case Study A 74-year-old African American woman, Ms. Richardson, was brought to
the hospital emergency room by the police.  She is unkempt, dirty, and
foul-smelling.  She does not look at the interviewer and is apparently
confused and unresponsive to most of his questions.  She knows her
name and address, but not the day of the month. She is unable to
describe the events that led to her admission.

The police reported that they were called by neighbors because Ms.
Richardson had been wandering around the neighborhood and not
taking care of herself.  The medical center mobile crisis unit went to her
house twice but could not get in and presumed she was not home.
Finally, the police came and broke into the apartment, where they were
met by a snarling German shepherd.  They shot the dog with a
tranquilizing gun and then found Ms. Richardson hiding in the corner,
wearing nothing but a bra. The apartment was filthy, the floor littered
with dog feces.  The police found a gun, which they took into custody.
The following day, while Ms. Richardson was awaiting transfer to a
medical unit for treatment of her out-of-control diabetes, the psychiatric
provider attempted to interview her.  Her facial expression was still
mostly unresponsive, and she still didn’t know the month and couldn’t
say what hospital she was in.  She reported that the neighbors had
called the police because she was “sick,” and indeed she had felt sick
and weak, with pains in her shoulder; in addition, she had not eaten for 3
days.  She remembered that the police had shot her dog with a
tranquilizer and said the dog was now in “the shop” and would be
returned to her when she got home.  She refused to give the name of a
neighbor who was a friend, saying, “he’s got enough troubles of his
own.” She denied ever being in a psychiatric hospital or hearing voices
but acknowledged that she had at one point seen a psychiatrist “near
downtown” because she couldn’t sleep.  He had prescribed medication
that was too strong, so she didn’t take it.  She didn’t remember the
name, so the interviewer asked if it was Thorazine.  She said no, it was
“allal.”  ‘Haldol?”, ask the interviewer. She nodded.

The interviewer was convinced that was the drug, but other observers
thought she might have said yes to anything that sounded remotely like
it, such as “Elavil.” When asked about the gun, she denied, with some
annoyance, that it was real and said it was a toy gun that had been
still feeling weak and sick, complained of pain in her shoulder, and
apparently had trouble swallowing.  She did manage to smile as the
    team left her bedside.

    Schizophrenia Spectrum Case

After studying Module 7: Lecture Materials & Resources, discuss the following:

    Case
    Study

Mr. T is a 21-year-old man who is brought to the ER by his mother after
he began talking about “aliens” who were trying to steal his soul. Mr. T
reports that aliens left messages for him by arranging sticks outside his
home and sometimes send thoughts into his mind.

On exam, he is guarded and often stops talking while in the middle
of expressing a thought. Mr. T appears anxious and frequently scans the
room for aliens, which he thinks may have followed him to the hospital.
He denies any plan to harm himself but admits that the
aliens  sometimes want him to throw himself in front of a car, “as this
will change the systems that belong under us.”

The patient’s mother reports that he began expressing these ideas a few
months ago, but that they have become more severe in the last
few weeks. She reports that during the past year, he has become
isolated from his peers, frequently talks to himself, and has stopped
going to community college. He has also spent most of his time reading
science fiction books and creating devices that will prevent aliens from
hurting him. She reports that she is concerned because the patient’s
father, who left while the patient was a child, exhibited similar symptoms
many years ago and has spent most of his life in a psychiatric hospital.

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

This  week, you will use the case study you read to examine the usefulness of  interdisciplinary studies "in the real world." The initial post is due  by Thursday at 11:59 pm ET. You should respond to at least two  classmates by Sunday at 11:59 pm ET with analysis/assessment, feedback,  and suggestions on your classmates' posts (offer something of substance  and add to the conversation — more than "great job!" "fascinating!"  etc; you should not repeat what someone else has already said). **First, answer these questions:**
    1. What is the claim/argument/thesis/major finding of the article?  (i.e. what is its purpose? what is it trying to convince you of?)
    2. What disciplines did the article appeal to/use/integrate?
    3. What evidence did the article employ to support its claim/argument/thesis/major finding?
**Then:** Consider how the findings of the article  represent a real world application of interdisciplinary studies. Using  specific examples and evidence from the article, explain how an  interdisciplinary approach/method/synthesis helped understand the  problem or issue in a way that a disciplinary approach or method might  not have.
