    Guidance to follow

I encourage you to build your project format following the requirements established in each project's final step. I am going to give you the key to success. I am a fan of headings/subheadings in the final project that directly reflect the defined requirements. You should format all your submissions in this manner. Doing so makes it easy for me to see that you are addressing the criteria specified in that assignment. It leaves less room for me to make my interpretation since you will make it clear that you have addressed the rubrics of the assignment.  This will also keep you on track to success by preventing scope creep. There is no space to add unnecessary material. I look for executive writing at the graduate level, which directly translates to being clear and concise.  Be aware that steps must be consolidated/coordinated in the final submission, not just cut and pasted together.

    So…

I recommend showing me the direct relation between your material and what is being graded ‐ use formatting (headings/subheadings/appendices) to establish the correlation.

I strongly encourage you to complete your profiles as asked in an earlier post. This is the first window to build relationships amongst your peers in the course.

I encorage the use of Appeciecesin your papers.  They can be used to keep the main content clear and concise while adding the detailed background information needed to inform the main content.  Here are tips to be successful in their use.

    1. If there is a page requirement for X pages.  The main content should be no more, no less.  Caveat: I only count between the first letter in the Introduction to the last letter in the Conclusion (what I call the main content of the paper).

    2. Appendices should be placed after the references section and each Appendix should begin on its own page.  Titled as Appendix A, B, C, etc.

    3. The full document must be formatted in APA, even Appendices.

    4. Appendices should include more than a table or figure.  There should be paragraphed context in each Appendix to support the table or figure.  They are best presented as if I can pull a single appendix out and understand it as a stand-alone document.

    5. Paragraphs should be ~5 sentences.

    Unit 2 Assignment Directions:

    Risk-Assessment Strategy

    Purpose

In this assignment, you will detail the risk-assessment plan and strategy for your organization that you described in your discussion post. You have demonstrated that you understand their core business functions and mission. Your risk assessment should be tailored to that understanding. If you implement the risk-management controls recommended by NIST, another standards body, or a trade association for your industry, you will be demonstrating compliance with government requirements. This means that if there is a breach, your legal office can provide a written justification that maps your compliance to your direct business services. This will also support any insurance claims and help to maintain your business reputation.

    Directions

Write a detailed overview and analysis of the fundamentals of risk management in cybersecurity for your organization that you described in your discussion post. You may choose one of the following two options for formatting your response (see details below):

    · Option A: A 4- to 6-page paper
    **OR**

    · Option B: A matrix (sample provided below) and a 2- to 3-page narrative

Regardless of which format you choose, be sure to address all the following elements:

    1.
**Write a substantive executive summary** that includes the following:

    a. A brief statement on the purpose and scope of the RA

    b. Your focus on the current organizational assessment

    c. Your risk-mitigation and management strategy

    d. Cited references to authorities that show the organization’s compliance with government requirements, industry best practices (NIST), or other standards

    2.
**Assess the cybersecurity posture** of your chosen organization. Be sure to include the following:

    a. Describe your organization's business goals, mission, objectives, and how the requirements would support them.

    b. Use the implementation tiers in NIST to assess your organization’s current situation.

    c. List vulnerabilities, countermeasures, and recommendations for improvement.

    3.
    **Apply the NIST RMF framework:**

    a. Explain in more detail how to use NIST 800-53 (rev.5), NIST 800-30, and the new NIST 2.0 to create a comprehensive strategy.

    b. Explain what actions you would take to align your business strategy with the recommended NIST best practices.

    c. Clearly map the business objectives and goals to a cybersecurity plan. Include all the following key measures:

    i. Prepare the organization.

    ii. Categorize system and information.

iii. Select a range of 4–6 NIST SP 800-53 controls.

iv. Implement the controls and document how controls were deployed.

    v. Assess whether the controls are in place, operating as intended, and producing the desired outcomes.

    vi. Authorize risk-based decision-making.

vii. Continuously monitor implementation and risks to the system.

    4.
**Evidence of skills:** Demonstrate your knowledge of risk-assessment protocols as well as legal and regulatory compliance.

    5.
**Write** the paper with an organized, logical flow of information. Cite authoritative sources sufficiently to show that your analysis is based on the resources provided or other documents you find through your research. Please use a consistent citation style.

    Executive Summary Features

Here are some ideas for what to include in your executive summary. A CEO should be able to use your summary for decision-making purposes. An executive summary includes a brief statement of the issue, which helps the executive understand the topic (risk mitigation and management).

As stated in the directions, cite the authorities you are using to show compliance with government requirements, industry best practices (e.g., NIST), or other standards. To analyze the importance of these requirements and best practices, one approach would be to follow the suggestions below.

Explain briefly how the templates and their rationale provide assurances to the CEO that these requirements reduce the organization’s cybersecurity risk. One way to do this is to cite a specific requirement as an example and explain how it is applied. Then you may also want to talk briefly about a technological solution you are using to assist you in this effort. You can then list some of the vulnerabilities your organization has in the system and explain how you will address them, Finally, you could discuss how you will make sure that you are ensuring compliance (e.g., continuous monitoring, establishing a training program that requires quarterly testing, or some other methods that demonstrate active participation).

    Creating Effective PowerPoint Presentations

    Grand Canyon University

    Sample A. Student

A PowerPoint presentation can often be used to complement the overall presentation delivery, rather than serving as the presentation.

PowerPoint offers numerous presentation templates. These can be found under the “Design” tab. The templates offer pre-designed backgrounds and Title/Text boxes.

Use of the “Notes” function is beneficial because it allows the author to add information to the presentation as reference without adding too much content to the slide itself.

    1

    Objectives

Outlining the objectives allows readers to identify the reason for the presentation.

Objectives should be brief and to the point.

List information about what the reader should learn from the presentation.

Objectives should be listed in presentation order.

The inclusion of an “Objectives” slide at the beginning of a presentation allows the viewer to better understand the focus of the presentation.

The objectives should be limited to 4-5 key points and should encapsulate those points that the presenter wants the viewer to learn from the presentation.

The objectives should also be measurable. For example, use verbs such as “explain” or “describe” instead of “understand” whenever possible.

    2

    Slide Structure

Use bullets to separate out ideas.

Try to follow the 6 X 6 rule.

Limit to 6 bullets per slide.

Limit to 6 words per bullet.

Too much slide information causes confusion.

    The audience may become distracted.

The 6X6 rule allows the reader to follow the presentation more easily.

The presenter can include additional notes or comments in the “Notes” section.

Listing too much information on the slide could make it difficult to read and cause confusion.

    3

    Slide Appearance

    Stay consistent.

Use one theme throughout the presentation.

Align text for consistency between slides.

    Use transition effects wisely.

    Use readable fonts.

    Font must be readable.

Font and background colors should contrast.

    Font size must remain consistent.

Too many effects can take away from the presentation. Movements, animation and sound should be kept to a minimum and only used where effective.

Ensure that the font style and font size are consistent throughout the presentation. Select colors that are readable against the slide background.

Maintain a consistent font size and style on all slide titles.

    4

    Content

    Keep it simple.

    Break up information between slides.

One slide need not house everything.

    Be concise.

    Wordiness will confuse the reader.

    Brevity is always preferred.

It is always a good practice to use additional slides when presenting a lot of information, rather than packing that information into a single slide.

Use as few words as possible to make key points.

    Slides should be simple.

    5

    Visual Aids

Visual Aids can enhance a presentation.

Images must pertain to the presentation.

An abundance of images can be distracting.

Visual aids (pictures, images, etc.) can greatly enhance a presentation. However, overuse of visual aids can limit the effectiveness of the presentation.

The images used must pertain to the presentation.

You can create your own visual aids either by taking a picture or by using one of the many free graphics makers online. Photos you take and graphics you create yourself do not need a reference. If you use pictures or graphics that you found online you will need to follow the rules of the citation style—APA, MLA, or Turabian—that you are using. Be aware that unless an image specifically says it isn’t, you should assume all image and graphics online are under copyright.

    6

    Charts and Graphs

    Graphs/charts should tell a story.

Graphs/charts must be clear and pertinent.

Use bullets to provide supporting information.

Charts and graphs can reinforce the key information in the presentation.

Avoid the use of large spreadsheets that contain information that is too small for the viewer to comfortably see.

Consider the use of “call outs” to highlight key information on a chart or graph.

    7

    Presentation of Information

Always check spelling, grammar, and formatting.

    Check for consistency before presenting.

    Slide theme

    Slide transitions

    Punctuation

Ensure that key points are delivered accurately.

It is a good practice to have someone else proof the presentation before it is delivered.

Slides must be consistent in format, font and style.

Use tools to check spelling and grammar.

Punctuation must be consistent: Within bullets, periods should be placed at the end of full sentences.

Ensure that the key points are delivered effectively.

    8

    Questions

End the presentation with a section for questions.

    This encourages audience involvement.

Always allow time for audience questions.

    9

    Review

Revisit the objectives to ensure all were met.

Briefly review the key information covered.

Check for any need to follow up.

A review slide helps to reinforce key points and brings the presentation to an effective conclusion.

It also allows the presenter an opportunity to check for understanding.

    10

    References

Provide references for any outside sources.

Follow the guidelines for the required citation style.

Follow the citation style rules on when and how to cite images and graphics.

When creating the references slide, use the style and edition outlined by the instructor.

    APA, MLA, or Turabian.

Follow the reference formatting rules of the required style guide, such as which pieces of information to include and in what order. General formatting rules such as font size do not apply to presentations.

The GCU Style Guide for Turabian has specific instructions for presentations.

    When referencing pictures or images:

Check the rules of the citation style for when and how images and graphics are cited, as they are treated very differently between the different styles.

For example, APA 7th Edition does not require a citation, reference, or source for images or graphics that have “no attribution required” licenses. A caption and reference are required for all other images.

Consult the GCU Library’s Citing Sources Guides https://libguides.gcu.edu/CitingSources for examples of image citations.

This week, you are required to submit a company evaluation. Your paper analysis should be between 3 – 5 pages, not counting the title and reference page. No submission should be fewer than 1050 words.

Include a clear and concise introduction.

Format your paper so that the three questions asked below are clearly defined using headings.  Use short headings to introduce your topics (do not repeat the whole question).  Double-space your work, cite your work, limit quotes, and edit your work well for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. If you use any quotes, you must increase the length of your paper to compensate. Make sure you have two additional references other than the text, and use citations.

Most of the case studies have authors listed within them. Use those authors to formulate your reference listing and citations. If there is no author listed, use the text as a reference where they were derived.

    PUBLISHED PEER-REVIEWED RESEARCH
    VERSUS THE POPULAR PRESS

Peer-reviewed research presents findings in ways that other behavioral scientists can understand. But
how are findings communicated more broadly?

It is not uncommon for the popular press (e.g., magazines such as Time and Newsweek) to adapt a
peer-reviewed research article that contains technical jargon and make it more relatable to the public.
However, because journalists are not research scientists, sometimes important concepts get lost in
translation (e.g., inferring cause from a correlational study).

In this Assignment, you will review a popular press article along with the peer-reviewed article on
which it is based. You will consider ways that the popular press article was successful in making the
content more accessible and how the article may have misrepresented information from the peer-
    reviewed research.

Compare and contrast the popular press and peer-reviewed article, noting what the popular
press article got correct, missed, etc. in the attempt to adapt the peer-reviewed article for a
    broader audience.

Submit a 2- to 3-page paper that responds to the following:

    For the article set:

In one brief paragraph, identify from the original, peer-reviewed research study:
    1) The primary goal of the study (describe, predict, determine cause, or explain)
    2) The research method used (experimental, nonexperimental, or a mix of both methods)
    3) The outcome of the study.

Explain if the peer-reviewed article is an example of basic or applied research, and how you
    determined this.
Describe one example of how the popular press article accurately presented the peer-
reviewed article in a more accessible/relatable way to promote easier understanding of the
    topic or a related concept.
Describe one example of how the popular press article inaccurately presented or omitted
important information from the peer-reviewed article in an attempt to make the information
more relatable to a broader audience.
State one takeaway that you learned from the resources this week that will aid in your future
ability to critically approach claims in the media.
