The clinician in the YMH Boston Vignette also exhibited many of the competencies for assessing an adolescent patient with psychiatric distress. Specifically, it is noteworthy that early in the interview, the clinician achieved a rapport via a non-hostile tone, an open way of sitting, and by asking open-ended questions. The latter approach helped the adolescents feel at ease and open about sensitive matters. The provider also used active listening skills, including reflective statements and summarization of the patient’s responses, which enhanced empathy and trust. These are particularly very important for adolescents, who might be uncomfortable with a personal or traumatic experience. But the clinician was not without faults. The targeted youth was asked about his emotional and behavioral experiences. However, the student's academic performance issues, the level of social behavior of the patient, and family problems were not explored with the patient, nor with the family. Furthermore, the clinician might have further examined safety, for example, direct inquiry about suicidal ideation, self-injurious behavior, or trauma history. Symptomatology such as a lack of interest or feeling worthless should be a focus of attention at this stage of the clinical interview, and it is important to keep in mind that the adolescent may not have articulated their feelings of depression. This justifies a detailed investigation of mood symptoms, patterns of sleep, and changes in appetite, as well as psychosocial stressors (Richter et al., 2022). An important next question would have been: Can you tell me more about your relationships at home and school? This item helps the clinician to evaluate the adolescent's support network, identify potential conflicts or stressors, and examine social well-being, all factors known to be associated with health in youth. A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation is essential in children and adolescents, given their specific developmental, psychological, and environmental peculiarities. Deviations from these trajectories can be further complicated in a pediatric population because children may be unable to voluntarily explain their emotions and feelings (i.e., through lack of cognitive or verbal skills), thus requiring clinicians to collect information about children’s reactions by direct observation, information from others, and use of standardized assessment tools. In addition, early detection and treatment of psychiatric disorders in children can result in early interventions that are associated with more positive long-term outcomes, such as academic achievement, peer functioning, and emotional regulation. Two symptom inventories that are especially well-suited for child and adolescent evaluations are the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and the Revised Children’s Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS). CBCL is one of the most commonly used parent-report measures, covering the emotional and behavioral functioning of a child in domains such as anxious-depressed, aggressive behavior, and attention problems. The RCADS is a self-report instrument that permits clinicians to screen for anxiety and depressive symptoms consistent with DSM-5 Criteria and has excellent reliability and validity in youth samples (Becker et al., 2019). Play therapy and parent–child interaction therapy (PCIT) are two types of treatment for children that are used less often with adults. Play therapy is especially effective for young children who have limited verbal abilities; it is the process of using play techniques to communicate and resolve difficulties. PCIT targets enhanced parent-child interactions and behaviors via live coaching that supports parents in the implementation of “best practices” in managing challenging child behaviors. Parents' and carers' involvement is central to the assessment of pupils. They offer valuable historical and developmental information, behavioral observations, and contextual information that children may struggle to verbalize. Furthermore, their participation is crucial for informed consent, implementing treatment decisions, and overseeing progress. Caregiver collaboration not only encourages adherence but also promotes a holistic, family-centered approach to care. Respond to this discussion by offering additional insights or alternative perspectives on their analysis of the video, other rating scales that may be used with children, or other treatment options for children not yet mentioned. Be specific and provide a rationale with evidence.

Respond to at least two of your colleagues on 2 different days by offering additional insights or alternative perspectives on their analysis of the video, other rating scales that may be used with children, or other treatment options for children not yet mentioned. Be specific and provide a rationale with evidence.

    BLOOM’S TAXONOMY OF EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

Objectives state what we want our students to learn and be able to do. A statement of an objective contains a noun (type of

knowledge) and a verb (type of cognitive process using the knowledge).

General form of a learning objective: Students will be able to verb noun phrase.

Examples: Students will be able to design an experiment to test a hypothesis.

Students will be able to distinguish among confederal, federal, and unitary systems of government.

Students will be able to differentiate between rational and irrational numbers.

    ### **Hierarchy & Stratification**

    ## ![two people in a race, one with more obstacles than the other. Caption reads "What's the matter? It's the same distance!"](https://cerritos.instructure.com/courses/36982/files/1552383/preview)

Hierarchy refers to an organizing principle in society where some are ranked higher and have more power than others. These hierarchies are replicated in our schools, workplaces, and other institutions. For example, consider the pyramid structure of the employees at most workplaces. There tends to be one boss at the top of the period, and then several managers below them with slightly less power, and then lots of employees at the bottom with the least amount of power. The further up the pyramid, the fewer people there are, and the power becomes more concentrated. Because hierarchies are a prevailing organizing structure in our society, members of society tend to internalize this idea and it becomes our default lens for viewing the world–something that we'll have to work hard to dismantle in our own minds!

Another way to describe hierarchy is with the term stratification. While it doesn't follow the pyramid shape described above, the result of stratification in society means that one group has more power over another. In a gender stratified society like ours, men have more power.

    ### **Gender Stratification Video**

Watch the 10-minute video to learn more about this concept. Pause the video as you come across the key terms below to take notes.

    #### **Key Terms in the video:**

**gender stratification, emphasized femininity, hegemonic masculinity, gender pay gap, glass ceiling, second shift**

    ### **Privilege**

One result of hierarchical thinking is **privilege**. I've noticed that many people tend to feel more comfortable talking about inequality and oppression than talking about privilege (especially their own)–but if one person is oppressed, by definition, someone else isn't. The person free from this oppression or inequality is in a position of privilege.

Consider the gender wage gap. If women, on average, earn less than men, that means that men, on average earn more. If Latina women, on average, earn less than white women, that means that white women earn more. We focus more on the _lack_ and less on the group that has an _advantage_.

Discussing privilege means discussing those advantages. Talking about our own privileges can make us a little uncomfortable. Yet, nearly all of us are in the position of privilege at least sometimes, and it's not an insult to anyone to say so! The word "privilege" is simply a tool for discussing the world around us.

    Please watch the video below:

    https://youtu.be/qeYpvV3eRhY

We're going to focus on _white_ privilege for a moment because it was McIntosh's about white privilege, "Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack," that popularized the term privilege in the first place. Remember, though, that privilege can apply to gender, sexual orientation, ability, and other categories of identity.

Here are some highlights from throughout McIntosh's writing about **privilege**; I've italicized a few words for emphasis:

    – Privilege can be defined as an _unearned admission,_ _position or advantage_ granted to a particular person or group of individuals.
    – Privilege affords an individual or group of individuals _membership_ in the _dominant_ group.
    – McIntosh  writes, “[i]f one has membership in dominant groups and therefore power, one thinks of one’s thinking as _normal_ and _accurate_. . . [d]ominant behavior thinking rules out the need to explain anything that doesn’t seem normal to dominant groups."
    – McIntosh argues that privilege is the “ _up-side of discrimination._”

    This video helps illustrate privilege:

    https://youtu.be/2KlmvmuxzYE

The concepts of hierarchy and privilege come up a lot in discussions of gender. _Optional_: View the TedTalk below to help you navigate those conversations. The takeaway is that _it's ok to get it wrong when you're talking about sensitive and difficult subjects_. When talking about race, gender, sexual orientation, etc–especially when you're in the privileged position– _it can be hard to see your unconscious biases._ So when someone suggests that you've said something problematic, just know that it's just something you need to work on. It's not a reflection of you as a person. Personally, when someone is so kind as to gently point out something problematic that I've done or said, I try to be like Maya Angelou says and do better!

!["Do the best you can until you know better. And when you know better, do better." Maya Angelou](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f031f5672dc82c1578e72000f6aea4b5/tumblr_n6alj8NRCG1r9qfudo1_1280.jpg)

Image of Maya Angelou with this quote: "Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better."

    ### **What to Submit**

For this assignment, answer the **two questions** below in one or two paragraphs **each**. You can either type on a document and upload it, or type your response directly into the text box.

    Here are the questions:

"Privilege" is a foundational topic for this class. That means that other concepts build on it, so it's important to understand what it means.

    1. Identify a quote from the reading, the lecture material, or one of the videos embedded in the lecture that helps you understand privilege. Provide the quote, and use it to explain what privilege means and how it applies to the study of gender.
    2. How does privilege function in your life? Keeping in mind that each of us is usually in a position of privilege in some aspects, even if we're not in others, discuss how privilege functions in your life and that experience impacts you.

The term **intersectionality** refers to the ways in which our various identities overlap and interlock, and the term is a reminder that feminism is ineffective if it does not take an intersectional approach.

The readings for this lecture illustrate this. They don't use the term intersectionality because it hadn't been coined yet. When Audre Lorde and the Combahee River Collective wrote about race and gender in the Women's Liberation and Black Liberation movements of the 1970s and 1980s, they were identifying how they felt marginalized as women in Black Liberation spaces, marginalized for being Black in Women's Liberation spaces–and marginalized in both for being lesbians. As Lorde notes, "I simply do not believe that one aspect of myself can possibly profit from the oppression of any other part of my identity." And the Combahee River Collective write that "If Black women were free, it would mean that everyone else would have to be free since our freedom would necessitate the destruction of all systems of oppression."

Later, in 1991, Kimberlé Crenshaw, began using the term **intersectionality** to describe that unique space that exists when multiple marginalized identities intersect.

Crenshaw illustrates this concept in the video below. Please take notes in your Key Terms/Concepts spreadsheet as you watch:

    #### **Key Terms/Concepts in this lecture or readings:**

    – Intersectionality

Choose one quote from one of the assigned readings. Then, discuss (1) what it means, and (2) why you found it important or meaningful for helping your understanding of intersectionality and its importance to feminism and to studying gender. Your response should be about 200 words, or one well-developed paragraph. Make sure to include the quote in your response. (The quote does not count toward the 200 word requirement.)

    ##### **Need more guidance?**

You can choose a quote on your own, or choose one of the important quotes below:

    #### **From hooks:**

"Critical interventions around race did not destroy the women's movement; it became stronger. Breaking through denial about race helped women face the reality of difference on all levels. And we were finally putting in place a movement that did not place the class interests of privileged women, especially white women, over that of all other women. We put in place a vision of sisterhood where all our realities could be spoken. . . . The fact that participants in the feminist movement could face critique and challenge while still remaining wholeheartedly committed to a vision of justice, of liberation, is a testament to the movement's strength and power" (58).

"Feminist movement, especially the work of visionary black activists, paved the way for a reconsideration of race and racism that has had positive impact on our society as a whole" (59).

    #### **From Lorde:**

"From my membership in all of these groups I have learned that oppression and the intolerance of difference come in all shapes and sizes and colors and sexualities; and that among those of us who share the goals of liberation and a workable future for our children, there can be no hierarchies of oppression."

"The increasing attacks upon lesbians and gay men are only an introduction to the increasing attacks upon all Black people, for wherever oppression manifests itself in this country, Black people are potential victims. And it is a standard of right-wing cynicism to encourage members of oppressed groups to act against each other, and so long as we are divided because of our particular identities we cannot join together in effective political action."

"And I cannot afford to choose between the fronts upon which I must battle these forces of discrimination, wherever they appear to destroy me. And when they appear to destroy me, it will not be long before they appear to destroy you."

    #### **From The Combahee River Collective:**

"It was our experience and disillusionment within these liberation movements, as well as experience on the periphery of the white male left, that led to develop a politics that was anti-racist, unlike those of white women, and anti-sexist, unlike those of Black and white men" (Section 1).

"If Black women were free, it would mean that everyone else would have to be free since our freedom would necessitate the destruction of all the systems of oppression" (Section 3).
