Speech and Language Development
Paulo is a four-year-old child in your program. They seem to be a bit quiet, and you are becoming curious about their speech and language level.
It was during a hockey game on the grassy field just outside the daycare playground (a four-year-old level hockey game, with a lot of running and screaming, very few goals but very exciting for all participants) that Paulo started to really talk. The subject was the hockey game.
This is what Paulo said,
? “I wuv howkee. I yus wuv id.”
? “Did you see me wun?”
? “I wuz wunning and wunning.”
? “I wun so fas”
? “I da winner. You not. I da winner”
summarize Paulo’s speech and language. Identify their use of regular and irregular plurals and verbs. Compare Paulo’s speech to developmental norms.
What three activities would you suggest to enhance Paulo’s speech and language development?
What would you suggest could be changes to the environment – and additional toys/materials – to enhance Paulo’s speech and language development?
Suggest 3 developmentally appropriate and play based activities that would enhance the child’s speech and language development (include the name of the activity, the list of necessary materials, brief instructions.)
Explain why you selected the activity – making sure that you connect the observation of Paulo and the value of the activity. -

Assignment 3
Expository Communication Skills Reflection
Research online to find other creation stories (at least two!) from other Indigenous Peoples that are spoken or oral. Listen to them carefully in order to compare and contrast the stories, identifying the similarities and difference between stories from different nations.
See if you can find geographical influences on creation stories (e.g. Raven as the trickster for coastal peoples, Coyote as the trickster for peoples more inland).
First Nations stories are often rooted in place. Several stories make people think of landmarks of the area (such as interesting rock formations, the shape of an island, or a narrow valley) which draws the listener deeper into the story.
Some creation stories have a blending of the natural and supernatural world. This aspect relates to First Peoples views about the relationship between people and their environment.
Your Assignment: Once you have listened to a few creation stories, write paragraph that shows your understanding of First Peoples’ views about the interconnectedness between people and their environments.
Follow your paragraph with a list of the creation stories you read or listened to. Be sure to include the name of the story, author/source and website address (if you found the resource online). -
