Use details and examples to support your answer.
here is the passage
Everest Is Mighty, We Are Fragile Peter Hillary explores ways in which failure can be a kind of success. 1 Over the past few years, I have watched the public perception of Mount Everest drift from awe of the greatest mountain on earth and respect for anyone who succeeds in scaling it to an assumption that now things have changed. 2 Just as computer technology advances almost daily and our back roads become highways and then freeways, people believe that surely by now the tracks and camps on Everest are permanent fixtures that are improved each year. After all, in the Alps you can climb to huts high above the snow line and sleep in a comfortable bed and order food and wine from a concierge.! 3 For Everest climbers, there has been progress, too, but it lies only in the technology of our equipment and communications. The mountain remains the same: huge, steep, cold and impassive toward our human endeavor. On the great mountains of the world there is constancy, and the Everest that took the lives of George Leigh Mallory and Andrew Irvine in the 1920s is the same Everest that was finally climbed by my father, Sir Edmund Hillary, and Tenzing Norgay in 1953, the same mountain climbed solo by Reinhold Messner in 1980, the same summit I climbed on May 10, 1990, with Rob Hall and Gary Ball on a brilliantly sunny day, and it is the same Everest that took the lives of eight climbers, including Rob, in a terrible storm on May 10, 1996. 5 Some things never change. While having the right equipment and clothing is essential, it is only 5 percent of the overall mountaineering equation of what is needed to reach the top. The rest lies with you. Do you have the drive, the psyche, the power? 6 Perhaps the greatest thing to change on Everest occurred on May 29, 1953, when Dad and Tenzing reached the 29,028-foot summit for the first time. It was like the breaking of the four-minute mile by Roger Bannister. The way was clear for others to establish records, but now not for humanity but for individuals. This is a new age in which individual participation has usurped national spectatorship. Just about everyone knows somebody who has jumped out of an airplane with a parachute on his back, rappelled down a cliff face, rafted foaming white-water rapids or taken a motorcycle for a 100-mile-per-hour blast around a racetrack. And so it is no surprise to me that the 100-year-old profession of guiding clients up mountains has extended to ascents of the world’s highest mountain-a mountain that has been climbed by 615 people in 43 years and has taken the lives of about 150. Many clients are expert climbers without time to organize expeditions, while others are more motivated than experienced. Nonetheless, these professional expeditions have succeeded in getting many people to the summit safely. Surely the time will come when the number of climbers on Everest will have to be limited, just as Yosemite National Park has been talking about doing. I would hate to see controls that were anything but first come, first served. The highly distasteful thought of a panel of assessors scrutinizing your qualifications, commenting on your objectives and counting the number of spare underpants in your day pack is objectionable to me. It is anathema to the personal right to challenge oneself. 10 What happened two weeks ago on Everest demonstrated the unbridled might of the mountain, its furious high-altitude storms and the fact that not even the experience and skill of two outstanding alpine leaders like Rob Hall and Scott Fischer is enough when the Big E stirs. 11 I have heard people say they don’t care about such climbers, who, in their view, take pointless risks. It was suicidal; they knew how dangerous it was. “They have satellite telephones, meteorological reports, Gore-Tex jackets and good jobs. What are they doing?” 12 So should we discourage the risk takers by despising and shunning them? Most of us want the people around us to be the same as we are and feel the same as we do-and yet intellectually most of us will admit that variety is good. We admire people who try a little harder and who push the envelope a little further. Every success by an individual is an inspiration for his or her community-just as a person’s failure is a time for the community to take stock. concierge: a member of a hotel staff in charge of special services for guests usurped: to take the place of by or as if by force anathema: strongly disliked or disapproved of “Everest is Mighty, We are Fragile” copyright @ 1996. her is the passage
Straighten Up! by Jude Isabell What would the Leaning Tower of Pisa be without the lean? It would be just like every other medieval tower in Europe! N The tower builders constructed a failure-sure it’s cool to look at, but towers aren’t meant to lean. It was an accidental engineering feat too. By 1990, it leaned so far-the top was 4.5 meters off center -it practically defied gravity. That same year modern engineers were called in to perform a modern, intentional feat of engineering-save the tower, and the lean. The Tower’s Tilt 3 The tower leans because it’s resting on clay, fine sand, and shells-an old riverbed. The tilt to the south happened because the sediments on that side are more easily compressed. 4 The tower-a bell tower to complement Pisa’s cathedral-is made mostly of marble and lime. Construction began in 1173 and ended five years later with only three stories built. The tilt to the south was already noticeable, but that’s not why they stopped building. Wars and lack of money halted the project-a good thing because the long break allowed the sediments under the table to settle. 5 Work began again in 1272. To compensate for the lean, workers added heavier material to the tower’s north side. They stopped in 1278. The tower was leaning even more almost a meter! Again, it was a good thing they stopped. 6 The tower had time to settle and in 1360, construction restarted on the bell tower. Ten years later and almost 60 meters high, the tower was complete-with an even greater lean. Over the years, the south side of the tower continued to sink and other interventions made the tower lurch even more. It was so bad that a 1990 computer model failed to reproduce the 5.5 degree tilt-the model tower kept toppling at 5.44 degrees. The Big Fix 7 In 1990, the job of fixing the tilt before the tower collapsed went to geotechnical engineer Michele Jamiolkowski from Turin Technical University in Italy and civil engineer John Burland from Imperial College in London In fact, there were bumps along the way and the tower almost collapsed in 1995; they call that time “black September” when the technique of freezing the ground failed. The engineers eventually convinced officials that one particular idea that had come up before would work-soil extraction. Successful tests on a model tower convinced engineers to try it on the real tower in 1999. They started with 12 bore holes, drilled beneath the tower’s foundation on the north side with a special drill, 20 centimeters in diameter. (While they drilled, 800 tons of lead counterweights stabilized the tower and cable “suspenders” were attached as a precaution.) Engineers eventually worked up to 41 holes under the northern foundation. Only six holes at a time were drilled, however, extracting between 200 and 300 liters of mud. Overnight, the tower would settle and seal the holes. Daily monitoring of the slightest changes helped Burland decide which holes to extract soil from next. He was iterally “steering” the tower Lovin’ the Lean 10 The lean was reduced by a mere ten percent-about 40 centimeters-an amount unnoticeable to the human eye. The engineers confidently stated the tower would last another 300 years. 11 Still, everyone held their breath when the suspenders were “unbuttoned” in May 2001 and the counterweights were removed. By December 15, the tower was officially reopened with only 30 tourists at a time allowed to climb the 294 steps to the top. Maybe officials finally realized that 700,000 tourists in one year might be too much for the building, let alone one that defies gravity.
