502 TRUE WOMEN AND REAL MEN UT everything-first contact, sex, the relationship. I wondered why I pos- tured and doted and acted in ways that, after the revelations with my friend, had seemed contrived and programmed. On the bus ride home after one of my visits, I had the realization that straight men strategically use certain words to police who we are. And three staple words at the center of that enforcement are the ones included in the title of this chapter: faggot, bitch, and pussy. All three of those words share something in common: Men use those words to devalue the feminine. That day I first recognized how homophobia, although it is usually directed toward other men, is, ultimately, an indictment and an attack on women. Gay men, accurately or not, are often called “effeminate” or “girly” or other names that connote femininity. In a world in which gender is socialized to exist in drastic binaries- with tough guys on one side and dainty ladies on the other-where is there room for any of us to be who we are? Furthermore, and more to the point, where do we see anything associated with women given value? To have the power of patriarchy and then to surrender it is a threat to all men. When I am not the overbearing, all-powerful man, who am I? When there is a fluid, changing spectrum of sexuality and gender, where actions aren’t prescribed and roles aren’t all but scripted, how do know what to do? The truth is, we have no idea what to do. The truth is, only when we move away from what we’ve subconsciously learned can we ever truly find and know who we are. That’s why I felt lost in Zambia. I felt lost and confused, and then saw 65 a change in myself. It’s why I felt liberated and opened up and craved the connections I made while I was there. It may have been why Brent and I woke up mid-kiss, both of us confused, flustered, and embarrassed. Masculinity is a choke chain. It is a suffocating bar that can never be met. How can every man alive be the toughest? And the most stoic? And the most brave? And the most powerful? And the most “manly”? I real- ized with my once-lesbian friend that my aspirations toward manhood had been a riddle for my own destruction. I was willingly playing a game I was destined to lose. We all are. By buying into the illusion of power afforded by patriarchy, we as heterosexual men do far more than just oppress women and gay men-ultimately we are oppressing ourselves. Ele I want more than this narrow slice of humanity I’ve been given sat permission to taste. I’m tired of not being able to show affection to my qu brothers and friends. I’m tired of feeling self-conscious when I kiss or stil hug my father. I’m tired of feeling like I have to hide my emotion and pa my sensitivity. I’m tired of being stigmatized for wanting to communi- m cate and express myself. I’m tired of needing to throw hurtful words like “faggot” or “bitch” or “pussy” around to prove that I’m a man. pa More than being just tired, though, I wish I could speak to that six- year-old version of myself with beautifully painted nails, that I could be standing in that square in Toledo where my aunt, uncle, and cousin E Mauricio used to live in Bogota and hear those kids yell “; Maricon!” (which means “faggot” in Spanish) at the top of their lungs. I wish I could circle up the group, like they were one of my classes at Drew

And I had to admit, what fucked with my head hedging on something. further-I was very attracted to her. This woman who said “fuck gen- my face, I could see his der” and spoke and moved like men I knew. Like I did! Ultimately, thing I was saying was though, it didn’t matter to me. I had always been attracted to her but, hing that morning. Was long before this talk, I had accepted the fact that she wasn’t into guys. was trying to break free? “Uh . . . I’m confused.
