Every January, the American Dialect Society (ADS) votes on the Word of the Year for the previous year. The requirements are that the word be new to that year or have risen from relative obscurity to prominence during that year. For the past several years, the ADS has added several other categories of words on which the members vote, such as Most Creative Word of the Year and Word Most Likely to Succeed.
On the following pages you will find the winners and some rival candidates in many of these categories from 2002 to 2009. For each word, identify the word-forma- tion process responsible for the creation of this word (e.g., compounding, clipping). If you are curious about the honored words in other years, visit the ADS Web site at www.americandialect.org.
