**Policing in the Digital Age:  Balancing Crime Prevention and Civil Liberties –** **Module 2**
Do current policing practices that utilize advanced technologies – such as geofence warrants,
facial recognition, and predictive policing algorithms – strike an appropriate balance between
crime prevention and individual rights, or do they disproportionately infringe upon civil
liberties?  How should courts and policymakers address concerns about reliability, racial
profiling, and the potential for technological overreach in modern law enforcement?

What practices are followed to ensure safety in the laboratory?

    Why?
Academic laboratory accidents are estimated to occur 10–50 times more frequently than chemical plant
accidents. Laboratory accidents often have unexpected outcomes that may result in permanent injury.
Dressing appropriately and following laboratory safety rules will reduce the incidence and severity of
accidents and help keep students safe.

    1. Create a laboratory safety diagram in the space below by doing the following:

    a. Sketch the outline of your laboratory room including all doors and windows.

    b. Mark and label the position of the following laboratory safety equipment.
    1. Fire blanket 6. Chemical disposal area
    2. Fire extinguisher 7. Broken glassware disposal
    3. Safety shower 8. Chemical spill clean-up kit
    4. Eyewash station 9. Location of goggles
    5. Fume hood 10. Location of gloves

    c. Locate and read the evacuation instructions that are posted in your laboratory. Describe how
you should evacuate in case of an accident.

    d. Label the fire exits in the diagram and add the evacuation route to your picture (this should
    be posted in your room).

    2. Biohazard materials are disposed of in biohazard bags when you are finished working with them.

    a. On the diagram above, label where the bags are generally located.

    b. What color are the bags?

    4. Why wear goggles while working with chemicals and glassware?

    5. When working with a Bunsen burner what precautions should be taken with respect to your
    clothing and hair?

    6. Why should one avoid wearing shorts or skirts while working with chemicals and with glassware?

    7. What type of shoes should a student wear while working with chemicals and with glassware?

Communication with your teacher in the laboratory can also help prevent accidents or injuries to yourself
and others. For example, you should always tell your teacher if you spill something or are cut or injured
when performing an experiment. You should also alert your teacher if any equipment or glassware is
broken. Your teacher can provide Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), which contain safety information
about chemicals you may come in contact with in the laboratory. Chemicals should be disposed of safely,
as directed by your teacher. Do not dump chemicals into the sink or trash.

    10. Suppose you spill a chemical on yourself:

    a. What information can your teacher provide for you concerning that chemical?

    b. Where is the information located?

    11. Why is it important to let your teacher know if you cut, burn or injure yourself when performing
    an experiment?

    12. Why should you tell your teacher if any equipment or glassware is broken?

    13. Why should you never perform unauthorized experiments or ignore written directions for an
    experiment?

    14. Your teacher asks your group to create a list of ten rules that everyone must follow in the labora-

your table to another group to compare responses.

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

    ## **Interview with a Pharmacist**
    ### **Overview**
    This assignment has three parts.
_**Part 1:**_ The learner will interview a pharmacist in your local retail pharmacy or the pharmacist at the facility where you currently work. Address the specific topics by using the list of questions below. You must include the answers to the questions in Part I: The Interview Transcript (below).
_**Part 2:**_ The learner will integrate the findings from the literature related to the type of technology used by the pharmacist.
_**Part 3:**_ The learner will provide a summary of what you learned as a result of doing this assignment.
The final APA formatted paper should be broken down into the following three parts (I, II, and III).
    #### **Part I: The Interview Transcript**
Interview the pharmacist using the questions below. Please provide a transcript of the interview in this part.
    1. What type of technology (technologies) does your pharmacy utilize?
    2. How does the technology you use enhance internal and external communications between pharmacists, technicians, physicians, advanced medical care providers, and nurses?
    3. Describe the process from the time the pharmacy receives an order to the time the medication is dispensed?
    4. What are some of the processes or policies that are implemented to ensure patient safety?
    5. Discuss the legal and regulatory requirements while using this type of technology. How do you ensure legal and regulatory requirements are maintained.
    6. What challenges, related to the use of technology and electronic information, have you experienced? What solutions have you implemented, or changes have you made in your practice to address these challenges? Have you identified any risks associated with using this technology?
    7. How has informatics helped and/or hindered patient education and awareness?
_**Note: This can be written as a bulleted list**_
    #### **Part II: Integrate the Findings from the Literature**
Research the specific type of technology your pharmacist described in the interview (for example: **electronic health records, automated dispensing cabinets, bar-code medication administration, pharmacy management software, e-prescribing systems, or telepharmacy platforms**). You may not find the BRAND of the software, so think about what the application does. What is its purpose, and research based on that.
    1. Locate **at least two scholarly sources** (published within the past 5–7 years) that discuss this technology in the context of pharmacy or healthcare.
    2. Summarize what the literature says about the technology’s purpose, effectiveness, safety implications, and challenges.
    3. Compare and contrast what you found in the literature with the pharmacist’s perspective from your interview.
_Note: If you have difficulty finding articles, try searching using broad terms (e.g., “pharmacy automation,” “electronic prescribing,” “pharmacy informatics,” “automated dispensing cabinet,” “pharmacy information system”) instead of the brand name of the technology._
This section should be **250–300 words (2–3 paragraphs)** and written in APA format.
_**Note: This should be approximately 250-300 words (2-3 paragraphs).**_
    #### **Part III: Summary**
_Elaborate as to what you learned about the specific type of technology utilized by the pharmacist; explain its uses and functions, pros and cons, etc._
    1. Summarize what you’ve learned by explaining _**both**_ the _**positive aspects**_ and _**negative aspects**_ of the technology used by the pharmacist you interviewed.
    2. Using a minimum of 2 scholarly articles (may be the same as above), support your summary with evidence-based practice.
Note: _**Note: This should be approximately 250-300 words (2-3 paragraphs).**_
