Scoliosis and Other Back Problems
Megan’s Story
Megan’s had an appointment to see her doctor for her 12-year checkup she was thinking that it would just be for a shot. But little did she know when the pediatrician doctor asks Megan to bend over and touch her toes so he could examine her spine. When she stood back up Megan’s doctor explained to her that she had scoliosis and her pediatrician doctor had to refer Megan to the Children’s Hospital to see a Prestigious Orthopedic and see Dr. Alvin H Crawford. Megan was very nervous about her appointment, but she was thinking it wouldn’t as be bad as your pediatrician had said. But she was wrong she had 2 severe thoracic curves, a less severe one just above her shoulder to about the middle of her shoulder blades, and the other one severed from the middle of Megan’s shoulder blades to just above her lumbar section of Megan’s spine. Dr. Alvin h Crawford Megan that she needed to come to see him every 6 months so he can check the progression because if it gets worse Megan may need to have surgery. So, Megan’s left the Doctor’s office with a positive mind. 6 months later Megan was back at the doctor’s office for a checkup and found out that it had got worsened now her curve is 6 degrees and Megan’s was up to a whopping 46 degrees curved Crawford told Magen now at this point surgery is an option for Megan’s, but it doesn’t need to be done ASAP. On Magna’s next appointment, she didn’t
see Dr. Crawford she saw a doctor Agabegi and he was much better with his approach. He told them by Megan’s curve being 53 degrees surgery is recommended but Megan’s bones were starting to mature what he means by that is Megan’s Curving is starting to slow down. So, Megan’s decided not to get the surgery and wait 6 more months to see the outcome. On Megan’s 4th appointment, she found that her curve was starting to slow down even more Megan’s curve was now 56 degrees and she was so happy about the good news so now Megan’s doesn’t need the surgery. When Megan returns to the doctor’s office 6 months later it wasn’t good news Megan’s curve had progressed another 4 degrees and now was 60 degrees. Megan’s curve had started to creep into her lumbar spine. Now if Megan doesn’t have surgery would be in pain in her back and not having the surgery would limit Megan’s motion. Megan doesn’t want to wait any longer so Megan’s decision to schedule an appointment for her surgery. Megan schedules her appointment for January. Megan was getting more nervous about the surgery, but she was not telling anyone she was going online to find out more information about her procedures but the information she was reading was making her more go scared. Megan was getting an emotional and mental wreck. Megan was reading about spinal fusion and how they straighten the spine with rods and power-type normal bones.
to fuse them together. Megan couldn’t deal with all the information it was too much for her to imagine. Megan started to have anxiety about the research she did. Megan’s finally talked to her School Consoler about it and she started to feel much better she still had panic attacks sometimes but it wasn’t as bad she had good days and bad days. A few days before Megan’s surgery her curve was 64 degrees and the curve near Megan’s neck that they never talked about was at a 54-degree curve. The day of Megan’s Surgery she was so nervous she was trying her best not to cry. Before Megan went into the surgery room, they gave her some happy juice and she told her mom and dad that she loves them. The next thing you know Megan was waking up in another room with her parents in there with her. Megan’s had to stay in the hospital for 5 days. The surgery wasn’t too bad for Megan, and it wasn’t any pain for her. Megan was back in school 3 months later, but Megan was really to go back before the 3 months. But Megan lives a happy normal life after her surgery -

From The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer translated by Nevill Coghill
In the medieval church, a pardoner was a member of the clergy who had authority from the pope to grant indulgences—certificates of forgiveness for sin—to people who showed great charity. In practice, however, many pardoners were unethical and sold their certificates to make money for the church or themselves.
“The Pardoner’s Prologue”
“My lords,” he said, “in churches where I preach
I cultivate a haughty kind of speech
And ring it out as roundly as a bell;
I’ve got it all by heart, the tale I tell.
5
I have a text, it always is the same
And always has been, since I learnt the game.
Old as the hills and fresher than the grass,
Radix malorum est cupiditas. . . .
“I preach, as you have heard me say before,
10
And tell a hundred lying mockeries more.
I take great pains, and stretching out my neck
To east and west I crane about and peck
Just like a pigeon sitting on a barn.
My hands and tongue together spin the yarn
15
And all my antics are a joy to see.
The curse of avarice and cupidity
Is all my sermon, for it frees the pelf.
Out come the pence, and specially for myself,
For my exclusive purpose is to win
20
And not at all to castigate their sin.
Once dead what matter how their souls may fare?
They can go blackberrying, for all I care! . . .
“And thus I preach against the very vice
I make my living out of—avarice.
25
And yet however guilty of that sin
from “The Pardoner’s Tale”
It’s of three rioters I have to tell
Who, long before the morning service bell,
Were sitting in a tavern for a drink.
And as they sat, they heard the hand-bell clink
5
Before a coffin going to the grave;
One of them called the little tavern-knave
And said “Go and find out at once—look spry!—
Whose corpse is in that coffin passing by;
And see you get the name correctly too.”
10
“Sir”, said the boy, “no need, I promise you;
Two hours before you came here I was told.
He was a friend of yours in days of old,
And suddenly, last night, the man was slain,
Upon his bench, face up, dead drunk again.

Du Bois
What evidence of socialist beliefs do you find in DuBois’ writing? How do you think it affected his scholarship? What misconceptions about African American history was Du Bois trying to address? What was the role of African Americans in Reconstruction according to DuBois? DuBois says the fight in the US for equality is merely a phase in a larger problem – “the problem of humanity.” (paragraph 25) What does he mean by that? Do you agree? -
