The first four rhetorical devices are euphemism, dysphemisms, downplayers, and weaslers. They are called slanters because they use a word or a phrase to change the true meaning of the topic being discussed.
“You say you are in love with Oscar, but are you sure he’s right for you? Isn’t he a little to …uh, mature for you?”
What is the slanter here? It is the word mature and it is a euphemism. The speaker is changing an expression that carries a negative connotation (being too old for her) for one that is more positive. Notice that this is not just using a different word that means the same thing, this actually changes the meaning of the claim. Someone can be young and mature and someone who is old is not necessarily mature at all.
Here is another example.
“He was at the bar for two hours officer, but I know he had only four drinks during that time.”
What is the slanter here? It is the word only and it is a downplayer because the speaker is using a technique for toning down the importance of claim to make it seem more important than it is.
How about this one.
“Despite what many politicians continue to say, the success of the surge strategy put in place by General Petraeus and Odierno is undeniable.”
The first part of this sentence before the comma is the downplayer here. Notice that if the claim is made without that first part it changes the meaning and is a much stronger statement.
Here is another one.
“Try the Neutron Diet for just four weeks, and you can lose as many as 20 pounds.”
This is an example of a weasler due to the words as many as. In fact, someone could gain weight on this diet but the speaker is still not wrong in her claim because she used the words as many as and thus did not guarantee anything. Be sure you understand the difference between the weasler and the downplayer.
Watch this video. Which of the four slanters discussed above is portrayed in this clip and why?
If you can not open it go to YouTube and type in Likeable? It is 51 seconds long and from the Democratic presidential debate, Janu -
