    Guidance to follow

I encourage you to build your project format following the requirements established in each project's final step. I am going to give you the key to success. I am a fan of headings/subheadings in the final project that directly reflect the defined requirements. You should format all your submissions in this manner. Doing so makes it easy for me to see that you are addressing the criteria specified in that assignment. It leaves less room for me to make my interpretation since you will make it clear that you have addressed the rubrics of the assignment.  This will also keep you on track to success by preventing scope creep. There is no space to add unnecessary material. I look for executive writing at the graduate level, which directly translates to being clear and concise.  Be aware that steps must be consolidated/coordinated in the final submission, not just cut and pasted together.

    So…

I recommend showing me the direct relation between your material and what is being graded ‐ use formatting (headings/subheadings/appendices) to establish the correlation.

I strongly encourage you to complete your profiles as asked in an earlier post. This is the first window to build relationships amongst your peers in the course.

I encorage the use of Appeciecesin your papers.  They can be used to keep the main content clear and concise while adding the detailed background information needed to inform the main content.  Here are tips to be successful in their use.

    1. If there is a page requirement for X pages.  The main content should be no more, no less.  Caveat: I only count between the first letter in the Introduction to the last letter in the Conclusion (what I call the main content of the paper).

    2. Appendices should be placed after the references section and each Appendix should begin on its own page.  Titled as Appendix A, B, C, etc.

    3. The full document must be formatted in APA, even Appendices.

    4. Appendices should include more than a table or figure.  There should be paragraphed context in each Appendix to support the table or figure.  They are best presented as if I can pull a single appendix out and understand it as a stand-alone document.

    5. Paragraphs should be ~5 sentences.

    Unit 2 Assignment Directions:

    Risk-Assessment Strategy

    Purpose

In this assignment, you will detail the risk-assessment plan and strategy for your organization that you described in your discussion post. You have demonstrated that you understand their core business functions and mission. Your risk assessment should be tailored to that understanding. If you implement the risk-management controls recommended by NIST, another standards body, or a trade association for your industry, you will be demonstrating compliance with government requirements. This means that if there is a breach, your legal office can provide a written justification that maps your compliance to your direct business services. This will also support any insurance claims and help to maintain your business reputation.

    Directions

Write a detailed overview and analysis of the fundamentals of risk management in cybersecurity for your organization that you described in your discussion post. You may choose one of the following two options for formatting your response (see details below):

    · Option A: A 4- to 6-page paper
    **OR**

    · Option B: A matrix (sample provided below) and a 2- to 3-page narrative

Regardless of which format you choose, be sure to address all the following elements:

    1.
**Write a substantive executive summary** that includes the following:

    a. A brief statement on the purpose and scope of the RA

    b. Your focus on the current organizational assessment

    c. Your risk-mitigation and management strategy

    d. Cited references to authorities that show the organization’s compliance with government requirements, industry best practices (NIST), or other standards

    2.
**Assess the cybersecurity posture** of your chosen organization. Be sure to include the following:

    a. Describe your organization's business goals, mission, objectives, and how the requirements would support them.

    b. Use the implementation tiers in NIST to assess your organization’s current situation.

    c. List vulnerabilities, countermeasures, and recommendations for improvement.

    3.
    **Apply the NIST RMF framework:**

    a. Explain in more detail how to use NIST 800-53 (rev.5), NIST 800-30, and the new NIST 2.0 to create a comprehensive strategy.

    b. Explain what actions you would take to align your business strategy with the recommended NIST best practices.

    c. Clearly map the business objectives and goals to a cybersecurity plan. Include all the following key measures:

    i. Prepare the organization.

    ii. Categorize system and information.

iii. Select a range of 4–6 NIST SP 800-53 controls.

iv. Implement the controls and document how controls were deployed.

    v. Assess whether the controls are in place, operating as intended, and producing the desired outcomes.

    vi. Authorize risk-based decision-making.

vii. Continuously monitor implementation and risks to the system.

    4.
**Evidence of skills:** Demonstrate your knowledge of risk-assessment protocols as well as legal and regulatory compliance.

    5.
**Write** the paper with an organized, logical flow of information. Cite authoritative sources sufficiently to show that your analysis is based on the resources provided or other documents you find through your research. Please use a consistent citation style.

    Executive Summary Features

Here are some ideas for what to include in your executive summary. A CEO should be able to use your summary for decision-making purposes. An executive summary includes a brief statement of the issue, which helps the executive understand the topic (risk mitigation and management).

As stated in the directions, cite the authorities you are using to show compliance with government requirements, industry best practices (e.g., NIST), or other standards. To analyze the importance of these requirements and best practices, one approach would be to follow the suggestions below.

Explain briefly how the templates and their rationale provide assurances to the CEO that these requirements reduce the organization’s cybersecurity risk. One way to do this is to cite a specific requirement as an example and explain how it is applied. Then you may also want to talk briefly about a technological solution you are using to assist you in this effort. You can then list some of the vulnerabilities your organization has in the system and explain how you will address them, Finally, you could discuss how you will make sure that you are ensuring compliance (e.g., continuous monitoring, establishing a training program that requires quarterly testing, or some other methods that demonstrate active participation).

    **Link for APA Style:** [**http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/**](http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/)

**Instructions:** Address each of the following bullet points:

    – Find a professional article online written for people in your field. Identify the intended reader and purpose. Write description of the article describing the elements in the article that helped you identify the reader and purpose. Be sure to include the URL of the article.
    – Study your school's Web site. Imagine you are a potential transfer student looking for a new school. Analyze the usefulness of the information available and how easy it is to locate information about various majors and directions about applying for admission. Identify 2-3 features of the Web site you would change in some way. Support your answer with citations from the text.

    – The following bulletin at a large manufacturing company provides guidelines for the plant security supervisors in assigning duties to the plant security guards at five separate plants. Revise and reorganize to make the bulletin easier to read and more useful to the supervisors. All supervisors must be conscious of the need to reduce costs and properly use available security guards in the most effective manner. Consider staggering the start and quit times to ensure a larger force during the peak demand hours. Every effort should be made to eliminate nonsecurity service functions, such as airport pickup, mail runs, drives to banks, drives to medical centers, parcel pickup. The supervisors should regularly review the schedule to be sure the coverage meets the needs of the plant. Guards assigned to gates should advise the shift supervisors whenever they leave their posts, including for lunch break. Nonsecurity service functions should be contracted out if possible. Drives to banks should be performed by the responsible department, but a department may request a security guard escort. Guards assigned to patrols, shipping and receiving docks, and special surveillance should tell the shift supervisors when they leave their assigned task, even for the lunch break. Supervisors should consider combining spot checks with regular duties of guards. For example, if a guard must open a gate and passes the trash center, the guard can spot check the trash pickup on the way to or from opening the gate. Supervisors must know about outside employment of guards. These outside activities should not adversely affect the security arrangements at the plant. In general, security guards should not also work at racetracks or casinos, or any places associated with gambling. Guards also should not be in partnership with co-workers since that relationship could negatively affect plant security. Supervisors need to check attendance records regularly. Frequent illness may indicate the guard cannot do the physical tasks appropriately. Questionable illness reports should be checked. Guards who operate small businesses may resist the normal rotation because it will interfere with their outside employment. Security requires a 7-day operation.

    – Find a real-world letter, memo, bulletin, pamphlet, or report online. Identify specific style problems. Evaluate the style and clarity of the document, and identify specific areas where revision would help readers. Support you answers with citations from the text. Be sure to include a url to the document you are evaluating.

    – Find a Web site you use frequently and analyze how you use it. How easy is it to find the features you want to see? Has the home page changed since you began using it? Can you recall which features were redesigned? How consistent is the placement of navigation links on the pages you use? How informative are the headings and page titles? Are there any distracting elements? Are the graphics helpful or simply decorative? Are there moving graphics or text? If so, do they enhance the usefulness of the site? Write a memo to your instructor, analyzing the design of the Web site. Support your answers with citations from the text. Be sure to include the url.

    – Find the home pages for the following: a) Ford Motor Company, b) Chrysler, and c) General Motors. Analyze the design features of these home pages in terms of users who are seniors or have problems making precise movements with the mouse. Report your findings to your instructor in a memo.

    – Find a review of a computer product online. Using the information in the review, write a task oriented set of instructions from the review. Be sure to include meaningful tasks and graphics. Use your book as a reference. Be sure to include the URL as a reference.

**Submission Instructions:** Submit your Midterm project in any format. **See attached rubric for further guidance.**

    Hello everyone,

Access control and physical security are important components of an organization's overall security but can be points of failure during audits. In terms of access control, common weaknesses include poor password creation and management, where users choose weak or reused passwords, and the lack of multi-factor authentication (MFA) (CQR Company, 2023). Relying on a single layer of authentication without a layered security approach leaves systems vulnerable to compromise. Another significant issue is the existence of overprivileged accounts, where users are granted more access rights than necessary, leading to increased risk if an account is compromised (CQR Company, 2023). Organizations often fail to promptly close accounts for former employees or contractors, leaving active credentials that could be exploited. Inadequate logging and monitoring of access events also pose serious risks, as potential breaches may go unnoticed without proper surveillance (CQR Company, 2023).

Physical security failures are equally concerning. Unsecured entry points, such as doors and windows without adequate locks or surveillance, are common vulnerabilities (Echelon Protective Services, 2024). Many organizations also lack proper visitor management procedures, failing to require sign-ins or visitor badges, which makes it easier for intruders to blend in. Furthermore, critical areas are often left unmonitored due to the absence of surveillance cameras or alarm systems (Echelon Protective Services, 2024). Another common failure is the unsecured storage of hardware. Laptops, servers, and workstations are sometimes left exposed and accessible to unauthorized users.

To address these deficiencies, organizations should enforce several key strategies. For access control, implementing multi-factor authentication is essential for all critical systems, along with applying the principle of least privilege to ensure users only have necessary access (CQR Company, 2023). Organizations must enforce strong password policies and automate account deactivation when employees leave (Echelon Protective Services, 2024). Detailed access logs should be monitored using tools like SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) systems to detect suspicious activity.

Regarding physical security, organizations should employ badging systems with photo IDs and require card swipes for entry to sensitive areas. Surveillance cameras should be installed around key entry points and server rooms. (Echelon Protective Services, 2024). A strict visitor policy that includes escorted visits, visitor logs, and temporary badges is also critical. Portable devices should be locked down securely when not in use, and regular physical security audits or penetration tests should be conducted to identify weaknesses (Echelon Protective Services, 2024). Ultimately, beyond technical controls, ongoing security awareness training for all employees is vital, as human error remains a major factor in both access control and physical security failures.

    **D.S POST 2**

Access control and physical security are methods to protect data and ensure only authorized personnel are granted access to restricted information. As discussed in our text, people use these security measures because they have something of value they intend to protect (Peltier, 2013). Ineffective access control and physical security measures can lead to insider threats, privilege creep, unauthorized system or data access, regulatory non-compliance, operational disruption, data exfiltration, and loss of public trust (CloudEagle, 2024). Security professionals and organizational staff must implement a layered security approach incorporating preventive, detective, and corrective access control types to their information security strategy. Within each control types are physical (locks, security cameras, or guards), administrative (policies, processes, training), or technical/logical (encryption, software security solutions, log-in badges) implementation methods (Peltier, 2013).

Some common strategies to address access control and security issues are to implement multi-factor authentication which requires users to provide two or more verification factors to access target systems, and implement an appropriate access control model to help organize and manage user permissions such as mandatory access control, discretionary access control, role-based access control, or rule-based access control models. Separation of duties, job rotation, and mandatory vacations are some internal controls mechanisms that can also help to prevent fraud and security risks within an organization (Gentles, 2020). Additionally, conducting regular access reviews and audits, ensuring to follow the principle of least privilege, and automating system access management can facilitate enhanced security settings to protect data and deter unauthorized access.

Organizations should routinely assess system configurations, access controls, and require security-based training to ensure effective protections are applied to the organization. By following these security practices, organizations can mitigate risks and promote a culture of security awareness with employee and customer buy-in.
