    **UNIT VI**

    **Photo Collage and Analysis**

This assignment measures your mastery of ULOs 1.1, 1.5, 2.1, 2.3, and 3.4.

**Assignment objective:** Your goal in this assignment is to create a photo collage and discuss the new meaning created by the collage.

**Details:** The photo collage may be created by hand (cut out pictures and glued together in one image) or created digitally, using PowerPoint or any application that you are comfortable using. For inspiration for your collage, please review the Unit V lesson, Unit V Discussion Board, and look at the Unit VI required reading in your textbook. Please incorporate at least three photographs into one collage. Take a photograph or save the digital work as a JPEG and upload it in the space below.

Select three photographs that have distinct themes, subjects, or moods. Cut out elements from each photograph and combine them to create a new, cohesive image. Be creative with how you arrange the elements to form a new narrative or visual statement.

    **Requirements:**

    · Use actual photographs only. Since this is our photography unit, your collage must be created from photographs (not illustrations, clipart, AI-generated images, or digitally rendered graphics). This assignment focuses on photographic images as discussed in our course materials.

    · All layers must be visible in your final collage. Your work should clearly show the cut-and-paste or layered construction process; do not use blending, smoothing, or AI generation tools that hide the individual components. We should be able to see where one image ends and another begins.

    · If you source photographs from the internet, you must provide complete references (including URLs) for each photograph used. Include these references at the end of your written analysis.

    · Do not use AI image generation or AI blending tools to create your collage. This assignment requires you to design the collage by manually selecting, cutting, and layering photographs yourself.

For the analysis, write a short paragraph (approximately 200 words) discussing the new meaning created by the collage.

Consider the following points in your analysis:

    · Original Context: Briefly describe the original context and meaning of each photograph before they were combined.

    · New Interpretation: Explain how the new collage changes the meaning of the original photographs.

    · Emotional and Conceptual Impact: Discuss any new emotions, concepts, or narratives that emerge from the combination of the two images.

    · Visual Elements: Mention any notable visual elements (such as color, line, space, time) and design principles (such as unity, variety, balance) that contribute to the new meaning.

This assignment encourages creativity, critical thinking, and an appreciation of how art can transform and reinterpret visual elements to convey new meanings.

The original, unaltered images used to create your collage must also be included with your submission.

    **Example**

    _Collage Description_:

    · Photograph 1: A serene landscape with a calm river and lush greenery.

    · Photograph 2: A bustling city street with tall buildings and crowds of people.

    _Collage Creation_:

    · The river from the landscape photo flows into the city street, blending natural and urban elements.

    _Paragraph Analysis_:

    · "The original photograph of the peaceful landscape conveys calm tranquility and the beauty of nature, while the city street photo captures the energy and bustle of urban life. By combining the two, the new collage creates variety that highlights the contrast between the natural world and human development. The river flowing through the city street introduces a sense of peace amidst the chaos, suggesting harmony between nature and urbanization. This collage alters the individual meanings of the original photos and also invites viewers to reflect on the relationship between nature and modern cities."

    **UNIT VII JOURNAL**

For this journal assignment, you will analyze graphic design examples from your daily life.

    Documentation Required:

Take one photograph that shows you with three different examples of graphic design from your home, pantry, or local environment. Your examples should demonstrate multiple aspects of graphic design (typography, color, layout, imagery, symbols/logos working together). Examples include product packaging, advertisements, flyers, or menus. Avoid minimally designed items with only a simple logo or single design element.

Compare and analyze your three examples. Explain which design is most effective and why, using specific observations and vocabulary from the textbook. Discuss how each design is persuasive and visually captivating by pointing out specific visual information such as color, type, design, layout, etc., and describing how those components have been used. You can also identify unsuccessful designs and describe the ineffective qualities. You may refer to the Unit VII Lesson as an example of the level of detail your descriptions should include.

Your journal entry must be at least 450 words in length. Be sure to incorporate language, concepts, and vocabulary from the textbook in your response. At least one source must come from the CSU Online Library. The

    **DB3: Emergency Communication Micro-Simulation**

For this discussion, you will create a two-tier emergency communication package for a developing public safety incident. This assignment asks you to practice writing messages that are clear, accurate, timely, calm, and useful to the public during an emergency.

**Please review the full assignment instructions and required resources in the Module 3 content page before completing your post.**

    **Scenario**

At 3:00 p.m. on a weekday, police receive reports of an armed suspect fleeing on foot into a residential neighborhood after a reported shooting near a small shopping center. The suspect has not been located. Witnesses describe the suspect as a male wearing a dark hoodie and jeans. Police are searching the area with assistance from neighboring agencies. Several schools, apartment complexes, and businesses are nearby. Information is still developing, and officials have not confirmed whether anyone has been injured.

    **Initial Post**

Your initial post must include all four parts:

    **1. Press Release**
Write a short press release for the police department or city website. It should explain what is known, what the public should do, what the public should avoid doing, and where updates will be posted. Do not include unconfirmed information or speculation.

    Suggested length:
    **Approximately 200 words**

    **2. Social Media Alert**
Write a brief social media alert for the same incident. It should be clear, direct, and action-oriented.

    Suggested length:
    **50–100 words**

    **3. Justification Memo**
Explain why you structured your messages the way you did. Discuss how you balanced speed, accuracy, uncertainty, public safety, ethics, and trust. You must refer to at least
    **two Module 3 resources**.

    Suggested length:
    **At least 200 words**

    **4. Information Handoff Flowchart**
Create a simple flowchart showing how information moves from the first report to the public message. A typed text flowchart is fine.

    **Peer Replies**

    Reply to at least
**two classmates**. Your replies should provide specific, constructive feedback on their emergency communication choices, such as clarity, tone, public safety instructions, accuracy, resource use, or the flowchart.

    Suggested length for each reply:
    **At least 100 words**

    **Formatting Reminder**

Use these headings in your initial post:

    · Press Release

    · Social Media Alert

    · Justification Memo

    · Information Handoff Flowchart

    · Resources Used

*****Refer back to the full Module 3 assignment page for detailed requirements, examples, and grading criteria.****

    **What Does Success Look Like?**

    DB3 Rubric

    Top of Form

    Bottom of Form

    · Clarity, Organization, and Audience-Appropriate Tone

Assess how clearly information is conveyed across all parts (press release, social media alert, memo, and flowchart) and whether the tone is appropriate for an emergency public communication and an academic setting. Messages should be easy to understand on a first read, logically organized, and concise while still informative. The press release and social media alert should use calm, direct, non-alarmist language with clear, action-oriented public instructions. Transitions between ideas in the justification memo should be logical, and the flowchart should present a straightforward, easy-to-follow progression of information.

    · Content Accuracy, Completeness, and Alignment with Prompt

Evaluate whether the submission fully and accurately addresses all required components of the assignment. The press release should state confirmed facts only, clearly describe what is known and unknown, and provide specific guidance on what the public should do and avoid doing, as well as where updates will appear. The social media alert should succinctly convey the core situation and key safety actions. The information handoff flowchart should trace the path from initial report to public messaging in a realistic, logically ordered way. Check that information is consistent across all parts and avoids speculation or unverified details.

    · Mechanics, Formatting, and Compliance with Instructions

Evaluate the overall quality of writing and adherence to academic and professional standards. Focus on grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and formatting. Check that required headings are used (Press Release, Social Media Alert, Justification Memo, Information Handoff Flowchart, Resources Used), that word-count guidelines are reasonably followed for each section, and that the flowchart is clearly and logically formatted as text. Writing should be coherent, professional in tone, and free of distracting errors that impede understanding.

    · Reasoning, Justification, and Use of Module Resources

Assess the strength of the student’s explanation for how they structured their messages. The justification memo should clearly connect message choices to goals such as public safety, trust, ethics, speed, and accuracy in conditions of uncertainty. It should explicitly reference and accurately apply ideas from at least two Module 3 resources, integrating these concepts rather than merely naming them. Evaluate the depth of reflection on tradeoffs (e.g., avoiding speculation vs. timely updates, calm tone vs. urgency) and the logic of how information is prioritized and sequenced, including how the flowchart supports this reasoning.

    **## DB3dee.docx**

    · Can connect to action research because institutions can use findings to improve student support programs

    **Design for Matrix:**
    ✅
    **AR-QUAL (Action Research – Qualitative)**

Here is paraphrased comment you can use:

    **Articles Comment 1 – Self-Regulated Learning & Student Success**

Kitsantas et al. (2023) explain that self-regulated learning involves students actively managing their learning through processes such as goal setting, monitoring progress, using strategies, and reflecting on outcomes. These skills are important because students who develop stronger self-regulation are better prepared to overcome academic challenges and persist toward educational goals.

    **APA in-text citation:**

    **Why this fits:**

    · Examines African American students’ experiences at predominantly White institutions

    · Addresses racial barriers, campus climate, and sense of belonging

    · Uses student experiences to identify institutional changes needed

    · Can connect to evaluating campus diversity/support programs

    **Design for Matrix:**
    ✅
    **PE-QUAL (Program Evaluation – Qualitative)**

**Article Comment 2 – Academic Achievement**

According to Kitsantas et al. (2023), academic achievement is influenced not only by students’ abilities but also by their use of effective learning strategies, motivation, and beliefs about their ability to succeed. This suggests that institutions can support student success by implementing programs that strengthen students’ learning skills and confidence.

    **APA in-text citation:**
    (Kitsantas et al., 2023)

**Article 3 – Quantitative Research Design (Can be PE-QUAN)**

    https://doi.org/10.1177/21676968231166967

    **Why this fits:**

    · Empirical quantitative study

    · Includes historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged college students

    · Examines discrimination, belonging, and student outcomes

    · Data can inform evaluation of student success programs

    **Design for Matrix:**
    ✅
    **PE-QUAN (Program Evaluation – Quantitative)**

**Article Comment 3 – Connection to African American Student Disadvantage Topic**

Kitsantas et al. (2023) emphasize that students’ academic outcomes are connected to their ability to engage in self-regulated learning behaviors, including planning, self-monitoring, and adapting strategies. For historically underserved students, including African American students who may encounter institutional barriers, structured support programs can help strengthen academic persistence and achievement.

    **APA in-text citation:**
    (Kitsantas et al., 2023)

    Your matrix could look like:

    | | | |
    | — | — | — |
    | **Article** | **Topic** | **Design** |
    | Sera et al. (2024) | Black student belonging at HBCU | AR-QUAL |
    | DeCuir-Gunby et al. (2023) | Racial barriers/microaggressions | PE-QUAL |
    | Freire & Hurd (2023) | Discrimination, belonging, student outcomes | PE-QUAN |

These three connect well under one topic:

**"Addressing barriers impacting African American college student success through belonging, support programs, and institutional change."**

These should fit my Higher Education Administration focus better than a broad "poverty" topic.

    For this assignment,
**USED** **Kitsantas et al. (2023)** as
**course support source** to explain concepts like self-regulated learning, student success, motivation, and academic achievement. Since it is not one of my three empirical articles, you can cite it in
    **introduction, rationale, or discussion sections**.

    **Example for your paper introduction:**

Student success initiatives should consider both external barriers and students’ internal learning processes. Kitsantas et al. (2023) highlight the importance of self-regulated learning behaviors, motivation, and strategic learning approaches in promoting academic achievement. Therefore, evaluating programs designed to support African American students should examine how institutional resources and student skill development contribute to retention and success.

    EDUC 750

**Research Design Project: Action Research and Program Evaluation Pre-Matrix Assignment Instructions**

    **Overview**

The main assignments for this course are wrapped into the Research Design Project. This project has three pre-matrices that will inform three matrices. Each pre-matrix and matrix address basic and applied research that is quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods, action research, and/or program evaluation. For each pre-matrix, you will find peer-reviewed education research articles on the same topic using the specified research design(s). For the matrices, you will identify methods, information, and critique the studies. This assignment helps you learn how to evaluate research, identify the main components, and start building your literature review.

This assignment will focus on specific types of basic and/or applied research. Action research is the most prominent form of applied research.
**Action research** is a research method in which a practitioner has a real-life problem or issue in their school that needs to be resolved, improved, changed, corrected, fixed, or eliminated when possible (Kitsantas et al., 2023).
**Program evaluation** uses empirical methods to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of programs in real-world settings, where most applied research occurs. It focuses on solving practical problems and improving programs and policies. As such, some experts refer to it as a form of applied research, whereas others consider it a third type of research—evaluative research (Miller & Salkind, 2002)

    **Instructions**

    You will submit
    **2** documents for this assignment:

    1. RDP: Action Research and Program Evaluation Pre-Matrix

    2. Zip-file with all of your articles (Naming convention of zip-file: RDP AR PE Articles)

    For the
**RDP: Action Research and Program Evaluation Pre-Matrix**, you will:

    1. Select
**3** research study articles published in a peer-reviewed journal related to your topic of interest.

    a.
    All articles must be
    **educational studies** published within the
    **past five years**.

    b. All articles must be on the same or connecting subject matter.

    c. Articles
**cannot** be literature reviews, systematic reviews, meta-analyses or meta-syntheses, any other type of review or synthesis, longitudinal studies, or instrument validation studies; all research evaluated must be original/single empirical research. Reports and dissertations are not allowed as they are not peer-reviewed journal articles.

    2. Each of the
**3** articles will have a different research design.

    You must select:

    a.
**1** Action Research study using a quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods research design (AR-QUAN, AR-QUAL, or AR-MM)

    b.
**1** Program Evaluation using a quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods research design (PE-QUAN, PE-QUAL, or PE-MM))

    And
    **1** of the following designs:

    c. Action Research using a different research design than the one used above.

    d. Program Evaluation using a different research design than the one used above.

    3.
**For 1 and only one of your article searches, you are required to use artificial intelligence (AI) to find and verify your article.**

    a.
**You may only use M365 Copilot, LU’s approved source for AI.**

    ## Sampling Distributions Assignment

Questions are taken directly from Brase, Brase, Dolor, and Seibert Chapters 5 and 6, pages 225 and 301, respectively. In case an eBook page number differs, the questions are listed below:

    Chapter 5:

    1. Discuss what we mean by a binomial experiment. As you can see, a binomial process or binomial experiment involves a lot of assumptions! For example, all the trials are supposed to be independent and repeated under identical conditions. Is this always true? Can we always be completely certain that the probability of success does not change from one trial to the next? In the real world, there is almost nothing we can be absolutely sure about, so the theoretical assumptions of the binomial probability distribution often will not be completely satisfied. Does that mean we cannot use the binomial distribution to solve practical problems? Looking at this chapter, the answer seems to be that we can indeed use the binomial distribution even if not all the assumptions are exactly met. We find in practice that the conclusions are sufficiently accurate for our intended application. List three applications of the binomial distribution for which you think, although some of the assumptions are not exactly met, there is still adequate reason to apply the binomial distribution.

    2. Why do we need to learn the formula for the binomial probability distribution? Using the formula repeatedly can be very tedious. To cut down on tedious calculations, most people will use a binomial table such as the one found in Appendix II of this book.

    a. However, there are many applications for which a table in the back of any book is not adequate. For instance, compute P(r = 3) where n = 5 and p = 0.735. Can you find the result in the table? Do the calculation by using the formula. List some other situations in which a table might not be adequate to solve a particular binomial distribution problem.

    b. The formula itself also has limitations. For instance, consider the difficulty of computing P(r≥285) where n = 500 and p. 0.6. What are some of the difficulties you run into? Consider the calculation of P(r = 285). You will be raising

    c. 0.6 and 0.4 to very high powers; this will give you very, very small numbers. Then, you need to compute C500,285, which is a very, very large number. When combining extremely large and extremely small numbers in the same calculation, most accuracy is lost unless you carry a huge number of significant digits. If this isn’t tedious enough, consider the steps you need to compute P(r≥285) = P(r = 285) + P(r = 286) + … + P(r≥285)? Does it seem clear that we need a better way to estimate P(r≥285)? In Chapter 6, you will learn a much better way to estimate binomial probabilities when the number of trials is large.

    3. In Chapter 3, we learned about means and standard deviations. In Section 5.1, we learned that probability distributions also can have a mean and standard deviation. Discuss what

    CJUS 745

is meant by the expected value and standard deviation of a binomial distribution. How does this relate back to the material we learned in Chapter 3 and Section 5.1?

    4. In Chapter 2, we looked at the shapes of distributions. Review the concepts of skewness and symmetry, then categorize the following distributions as to skewness or symmetry:

    a. A binomial distribution with n = 11 trials and p = 0.50.

    b. A binomial distribution with n = 11 trials and p = 0.10.

    c. A binomial distribution with n = 11 trials and p = 0.90.

In general, does it seem true that binomial probability distributions in which the probability of success is close to 0 are skewed right, whereas those with probability of success close to 1 are skewed left?

    Chapter 6:

    1. If you look up the word empirical in a dictionary, you will find that it means “relying on experiment and observation rather than on theory.” Discuss the empirical rule in this context. The empirical rule certainly applies to the normal distribution, but does it also apply to a wide variety of other distributions that are not exactly (theoretically) normal? Discuss the terms mound-shaped and symmetric. Draw several sketches of distributions that are mound-shaped and symmetric. Draw sketches of distributions that are not mound-shaped or symmetric. To which distributions will the empirical rule apply?

    2. Why are standard z values so important? Is it true that z values have no units of measurement? Why would this be desirable for comparing data sets with different units of measurement? How can we assess differences in quality or performance by simply comparing z values under a standard normal curve? Examine the formula for computing standard z values. Notice that it involves both the mean and the standard deviation. Recall that in Chapter 3, we commented that the mean of a data collection is not entirely adequate to describe the data; you need the standard deviation as well. Discuss this topic again in light of what you now know about normal distributions and standard z values.

    3. Most companies that manufacture a product have a division responsible for quality control or quality assurance. The purpose of the quality-control division is to make reasonably certain that the products manufactured are up to company standards. Write a brief essay in which you describe how the statistics you have learned so far could be applied to an industrial application (such as control charts and the Antlers Lodge example).

    4. Most people would agree that increased information should give better predictions. Discuss how sampling distributions actually enable better predictions by providing more information. Examine Theorem 6.1 again. Suppose that x is a random variable with a

normal distribution. Then x the sample mean based on random samples of size n, also will have a normal distribution for any value of n = 1, 2, 3… What happens to the standard deviation of the x distribution as n (the sample size) increases? Consider the following table for different values of n. Due to space, see the book to complete this question.

    5. In a way, the central limit theorem can be thought of as a kind of “grand central station.” It is a connecting hub or center for a great deal of statistical work. We will use it extensively in Chapters 7, 8, and 9. Put in a very elementary way, the central limit theorem states that as the sample size n increases, the distribution of the sample mean x will always approach a normal distribution, no matter where the original x variable came from. For most people, it is the complete generality of the central limit theorem that is so awe-inspiring: It applies to practically everything. List and discuss at least three variables from everyday life for which you expect the variable x itself not to follow a normal or bell-shaped distribution. Then, discuss what would happen to the sampling distribution x if the sample size were increased. Sketch diagrams of the x distributions as the sample size n increases.
