State the line of interpretation of To Kill A Mockingbird that you wish to defend…
State the line of interpretation of To Kill A Mockingbird that you wish to defend in an essay. You may choose one of the four quotes given below or one of your own. Keep in mind that your interpretation will be from a Biblical perspective.
? “I thought Jem and I would get grown, but there wasn’t much else for us to learn. . .” (Scout, Chapter 31)
? “It’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” (Atticus, Chapter 10)
? “Trash and fine folks . . .”
? “You never really understand a person . . . until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” (Atticus, Chapter 3)
Based on this line of interpretation, write out the thesis statement of your essay in one sentence. This essay will be assigned in your next project. The thesis statement should be properly restricted, precise, and unified. It does not need to include the exact quote, just the idea of it. If necessary, refer to the lesson material on thesis statements.
Remember that your thesis should be a way of interpreting the complete novel, not just a portion of it. Your perspective must be Biblical and should be reflected in the wording of your thesis.
Develop and type outline for the essay. The outline must be in standard form with the correct usage of Roman numerals, Arabic numerals and capital letters, spacing, punctuation, indentation, and capitalization. This outline must contain at least three main headings (I, II, III) with at least two subheadings (A, B) under each. The outline must be constructed in either sentence or topic format and must be consistent throughout, with each subheading relating in concept to the corresponding heading and each heading in turn supporting the thesis statement.
Your project will be graded based on the following:
? your attention to the instructions given above
? inclusion of a thesis statement, as presented in the directions, that is sufficiently restricted, precise, and unified
? correct development and formatting of an outline, as stated in the instructions
? use of proper punctuation, spelling, grammar, and sentence construction (commonly called “conventions”) -
Compare and contrast Shakespeare’s perspective to those of Machiavelli, Confucius,…
Compare and contrast Shakespeare’s perspective to those of Machiavelli, Confucius, and Tzu. Be sure to include applicable quotations to support your answer. Remember, every quotation needs a sentence to explain why you put it in your response.
Machiavelli’s perspective was like Shakespeare’s belief that leadership is corrupt.
Machiavelli
states there will always be deception, backstabbing, treachery, and crime in politics. His famous quote is, “The end justifies the means.” This means that if the outcome turns out well, no one cares how it was achieved. This means that it does not matter if a few people are murdered or suffer because all that matters is how everyone else was saved. The reader can also see this perspective in Machiavelli’s writing of “The Prince.” Machiavelli states, “Therefore a prince, so long as he keeps his subjects united and loyal, ought not to mind the reproach of cruelty.” This means that a person of royalty does not mind using harsh means against people to keep them on the leader’s side and loyal to them.
Confucius focuses more on the positive aspect of leadership. His teachings have many ideas about how a leader should be: loyal, caring, selfless, etc. If a leader behaves this way, the outcome will be better for everybody. The perspective differs from Shakespeare’s belief because Shakespeare feels that all leadership is corrupt. Confucius says it is a choice, and to be a great leader, you must follow the teachings. One example is the golden rule to treat others how you would want them to treat you. Another example is what The Master said: A person without trustworthiness, who knows what he may do? A carriage without a yoke strap, a cart without a yoke hook: how can you drive them? These statements prove that Confucius feels that a true leader will think of others, and you need people to trust you to be useful.
Sun Tzu’s leadership beliefs are different from Shakespeare’s and Machiavelli’s. Shakespeare and Machiavelli felt that all war would be wrong. Leaders fight battles for corrupt reasons, and war should be avoided altogether. In his writing “The Art of War,” Sun Tzu tries to find alternatives to fighting but feels it is necessary to protect others. The reader sees the need for war in the quote, “Move not unless you see an advantage; use not your troops unless there is something to be gained; combat not unless the position is critical.” Like Sun Tzu, Confucius does not encourage war in any way, but this may be overlooked if war is needed to protect the people. -
